He has never the same after his hip injury.

Dion is a decent comparable for Yak IMO. He’s one of the more physical defencemen in the draft but there’s no one as physical in junior these days as Dion was. It’s just a different game now.
Other comparables I think could be Dumba (floor) or Doughty (ceiling).

That’s a good one… montour actually fits really well as a middle ground between Dumba and Doughty I think.

He's one of the few players in the range the Flames pick at 9 that I would be disappointed with. His age and the fact that he won't be able to bully men like he did teenagers in the WHL throw some caution to the wind. Also the fact that NHL scouts don't seem nearly as high on him point to a guy that's more of a favorite by internet draft pundits than actual scouts.

I saw the photo of the top three in the Ekblad draft with the board behind them in the cup final thread and it included players in the top 10 who, to be kind, didn't go on to fulfill their potential. Yet there were players later in the round who were absolute studs (Pastrnak).
Drafting and development (with a little luck) are so critical; high picks give you a better selection but the organization's talent spotters and development staff are how you win through the draft.
Captain Obvious over here. Pretty excited to see what happens over the next few days.
Prediction: Helenius (who I'm happy with)
Preferred: Catton/Buium

I've hopped on the Helenius train if Iginla is gone at 9, mainly because I'm impatient and I've convinced myself he can play in the NHL this fall.

I am very excited for the next three years of drafts and team building. We had this opportunity once before after Iginla was traded and IMO that and the subsequent 8 or so years were a great time to be a fan.
I hope we don't #### it up by trying to accelerate it with big UFA signings of 30 year old players and trades in year 2-3 this time. Just hold the course. Of course, some UFA signings (like CALE MAKAR) would be just fine, but largely not...
I am still hopeful we have some combination of player/ prospects that warrants another pick around 10-12 landing in our hands. If we could draft one of: Buium, Parekh, Silayev, Dickinson, or even Yakemchuk, with Tij... That would be a very, very good start.
Tij is number one on my list. I would take him if he's available no matter who falls (I suppose unless Celebrini falls, but that will never happen.)
Out of the Dmen, I ranked them in preferred order above. I'd go for one of them in that order if Tij is already gone. If all listed players are gone, then we get one of Demidov, Levshunov, or Lindstrom.

Overall though, we are going to be bad for a few years and have collected picks over then next few drafts. There are some wildly good centres available in the next two seasons. Unless tij is there we should really be swinging big for a defenseman this season.

I think Helenius would be a decent selection if guys like iginla/Catton/Parekh/Buium/Lindstrom are already taken. His draft profile reminds me of guys like Lundell and Eriksson-Ek.

I hope we select a couple of core players from this draft. Anyway, we need draft high next couple of drafts to build main core of the team. Today we have 1 player who drafted at top 3, 1 player who drafted at top 10 and 2 players who drafted in the 1st round. But Huber, Backlund, Kadri all passed their prime. So we have only Zary in our roster.
Look this years top 4 teams roster:
Florida - (Top 3) 3 players, (Top 10) 4 players. and (1st round) 7 players = total 14 players
Edmonton - (Top 3) 3 players, (Top 10) 5 players. and (1st round) 4 players = total 12 players
Dallas - (Top 3) 3 players, (Top 10) 2 players. and (1st round) 8 players = total 13 players
New-York - (Top 3) 2 players, (Top 10) 3 players. and (1st round) 8 players = total 13 players.
I think we have a long way to collect a good team, and we need lots of picks and good management and good development. Lets have a good start by this draft.

When the Flames were forced to enter a rebuild in 2013 with Iggy moving on, and Kipper retiring the Flames had a bit of a trifecta in the first year after the tear down. Monahan was able to make the NHL at 18 so Flames fans got to cheer the immediate future piece. With Gaudreau they had a top prospect to follow as well while also being a bad team trending towards a top 4 pick in the next draft where there was a tier of 4 prospects at the top.
Next year I think it is unlikely the guy they draft at 9 plays next year so that person will be the Gaudreau role of prospect we are watching next year. Wolf perhaps is the rookie we watch next year but a much different situation vs 2013

I think where Silayev goes will be a big factor in determining how good this draft is for the flames. If he goes in the top 8, then that means at least one of my preferred picks will be available at 9. I really hope at least one team in the top 8 goes off the board with their pick. The more I learn about these prospects, the more I feel there is a slight drop after who I see as the top eight:
My top 8: Celebrini, Demidov, Levshunov, Lindstrom, Iginla, Catton, Parekh, and Buium
My 9th to 13th: Dickinson, Silayev, Yakemchuk, Helenius, Sennecke
For the most part, I think the guys in my top 8 all have a higher offensive upside than the players outside that group so I’m really hoping at least one of them drops to the flames. I guess you could argue Yakemchuk or Sennecke might be the exception. Any one from that top eight though would be a fantastic pick IMO.

Having one or two of these guys take a big step would really help:
- Coronato
- Honzek
- Morin
- Brzustewicz
- Pelletier
- Poirier
There's some other longer-shot guys too but any of these solidifying themselves as being key pieces to the new/next core would really get the rebuild/retool going.
Of course you also need Wolf, Zary, Pospisil to continue to improve after good starts this past season.

Agreed. Have to hope that at least one of those players listed (hopefully 2-3) become part of the core of the team within the next 2-3 years. If they do, it helps progress the momentum of the rebuild instead of only getting core pieces through top 10 picks in the draft. By core pieces, I mean they have to turn into either a top 6 forward or a top 4 defenceman IMO.
