But that is not at all the point. He makes $12.5M per year, because he is the captain of a professional sports team. Why do athletes make that much money? Because fans pay a ####-ton for seats, merchandise, and concessions, and because broadcasters pay a giant ####-ton to air games for fans to watch. He also makes millions in endorsements, because he is the face of the league. Thousands of Oiler fans flew to FLA to watch that game in person.

He absolutely should have made an appearance to accept the trophy that was awarded to him BECAUSE IT'S HIS ####ING JOB! With greatness comes great responsibility - if it's too hard for him to skate out onto the ice, stand beside Bettman for 10 seconds to shake his hand and take some pictures, then I would say he is not worthy of the greatness bestowed upon him by his fans.
I really fail to see what his salary or his captaincy has to do with him not accepting a participation trophy. Oiler fans flew down to watch the 3 hour hockey game that was played and possibly see their team win the real trophy, not the Conn Smythe. So he's in the locker room with his team mates after losing the championship and says "hey sorry guys, brb, I know we just lost the actual trophy but I gotta skate out there and accept MY trophy. Terry from Fort Saskatchewan flew all the way down here to see me win the heralded Conn Smythe award". Like c'mon. Hockey media was desperate to bestow this trophy on him no matter what and he rightfully treated it like the joke they turned it in to.

I don't get the he is supposed to come out there when his team lost? Yeah he is.

It just shows what a whiney entitled baby he truly is.

A lot of sporting events have the winner and loser on the ice when the medals are presented, and the MVP of the tournament as well. They don't just run away and don't come back.

People in the Olympics stand on podiums. Teams come back at the World Cup to collect the bronze medal lol. You think that is enjoyable.

I hope his mom yells at him

Matheson obviously should never be near a conn Smythe vote again, but even for the rest of them - did they forget to use the conditional "if Florida wins" ballots?

You ABSOLUTELY CANNOT have a near unanimous vote for a guy who was invisible in more games in the finals than he was visible for - and that includes game 6 and 7.

You cannot.

So McDinglenuts agent runs the Oilers and his childhood coach is running the bench. Who’s McD going to cut loose this summer?. The fact that they give a 27 year old so much power is bewildering.

I looked at the numbers, and Edmonton's top 5 scorers (McDavid, Draisaitly, Bouchard, Hyman and Nugent-Hopkins) scored about 65% of the team's goals in rounds 1 through 3. However, in round 4 they scored about 26% of the team's goals.

It is quite impressive that the team's depth players scored so much of their goals in the final round but I think what is more impressive is Florida's ability to keep Edmonton's top scorers at bay in big moments.

a few minutes after seeing Skinner allow a weak goal that gave a team with a perfect record in the 3rd period the lead Spector gives Skinner a 3rd place Conn Smythe vote as the best goaltender in the playoffs

league needs to do something, have a "award" committee or something that votes on all awards...not straight fanboys

Scapegoat Skinner. The guy who he and Oilers fans blamed numerous times all season and playoffs.

I had an Oilers fan tell me last week that the Oilers having to play in front of Skinner made up for the Canucks having to play in front of a third stringer.

Its also an entire playoff award, Skinner was replaced with Picard for 2 games FFS. Multiple Oiler homers voting I should have made the McDavid bet weeks ago.

Really the award should only be given to a player on the winning team.

Why? Lots of tournament MVP awards are given to players who aren’t on the team that wins it all.

It usually is, and as we've seen in this discussion its pretty rare that a player from a losing team does win it. Those that did accepted it, albeit grudgingly, because they're professional and this what pro sports is.

Not McDavid though.

Even his parents expected him to be there FCS.

It's funny how he had no problem attending the awards shows to accept his Hart trophies for regular season MVP, but playoff MVP was not his cup of tea.

If it were Gretzky, he would have come out and accepted the Conn Smythe. He probably should have won it in 1993 when the Kings lost in the finals.

Great to see the Oilers and their fans show their complete lack of class/knowledge right to the end
