What a waste of a season. Good luck selling expensive ass tickets in a new arena with no star players on your roster, and battling for 16th-20th overall.

Yeah I’m sure it’ll be dead in there.

If the pick is 11-16 then it goes to the Habs. I can see a situation where they put a team on the ice that is not capable of finishing in the top 22 to avoid that but if Florida somehow falls off the Flames could be screwed giving away a top 10 pick to the Habs.
The utterly brutal Monahan trade has yet to deliver the hurt to the Flames

I think people need to relax nothing has happened. All he said was we wont go scorched earth like San Jose.
We are making no major free agent signings. We are about to trade away our #1 goalie.
His actions are clear. The team is going to be compete, but they will be taken to the cleaners most nights.

I think you are correct but I also wouldn’t be surprised to see some form of win now and win later move come to fruition not that different from the Hamilton trade in 2015. Get a proven player now but one who will sign a 6-8 year deal or come with team control and RFA status now or in the next 1-3 years.
Not that different than the Habs getting Dach or Newhook.

Yeah, this is the general message they seem to be putting out there.
God I hope you're wrong though.
Many posters seem to think it's just misdirection. That the team is rebuilding but won't openly admit it for whatever reason.
The fact that they're still getting linked to being heavily involved for Necas worries me.
We will have to just wait and see what the moves look like.

Posters who think they AREN'T rebuilding or going to be bad are the ones in denial IMO. The remaining talent keeping the wheels from falling off was jettisoned out at the deadline. Some of the best players from last year are over 30. This team is trending bottom 5 easily

I have yet to see anyone tell me who they are retooling around.
Vladar?
Huberdeau?
Kadri?
Backlund?
Management is looking at that and saying let's get these guys some players and we are right in the hunt?

If Markstrom is traded and they go with Wolf-Vladar, there is nothing stopping the team from bottoming out.

I think people keep forgetting that.
Markstrom with this lineup went down the toilet.
Our backups are supposed to perform better next season with a marginally better team?

I know they are saying all the right things. But we may have as few as 1 top four d-men this season.
I can see Wolf being a .915 save percentage goalie with a 3.5+ GAA.
It's going to be that kind of year, so let's have fun with it.
|
This is exactly what I was going to post. It doesn't matter what the Flames are saying or intend. They were trying to make the playoffs last year and year before that. This year they will likely be without their starting goalie, Tanev, Hanafin, and Lindholm. Unless Huberdeau returns to flirting with the points leader in the league (and I'm not sure that is enough), this team as presently constructed is at least a bottom 10 team in the league. In my view, there are no free agents that are going to change this fate.
Most teams need to fall backwards into a full on rebuild. The Flames are already there from what I can see. It's going to be quite a few years before they are competitive in any meaningful fashion.

I was just going to post this. If Markstrom's traded you have to consider the possibility that this team finishes between 28 & 32 when you look at the blue line talent and unproven goaltending situation. This team as it's currently constructed isn't built to win a lot of games with average or below average goaltending.

Some posters need a personally addressed letter from the Flames declaring a rebuild in the exact style they requested or they will never be happy. And we will have to hear about it in every thread.
Personally I'll wait for the draft to play out and let the moves speak for themselves. So far nothing has screamed "compete for the cup this year" to me. It's been quite the opposite honestly. I'm not going to assign past mistakes to new management who hasn't made the same mistakes.

But is 65-70 points a tank season? 69 points is an average bottom 3 finish since 2006. It does not guarantee you get 1st OV but it does position you for a very high pick.
You think the Flames will make enough moves to replace guys like Tanev and Hanifin? I doubt it, they are trading Markstrom.

Fair enough but if the message to the market is we want to be turning this thing around when the new building opens it will give the fans more comfort in the message. Not sure what shovels in the ground does to change that but I don’t doubt what you are saying.
Steinberg has even hinted to a new rink being the timeline to compete (not contend)

We are not rebuilding and will draft 9-16 OV but we already traded half our team and had a .381 point percent after the trades and now are trading our #1 goalie for a pick. But we will add a young player and that will offset all the players we lost, and we will fight for the playoffs. Not seeing it
