Could have been a solid top 6 for another 4 years.

It's a tough pill to swallow for sure.
And then you think about the fact that they dafted a Norris caliber dman in Fox as well. A D with him, Andersson, Kylington, Hanifin would have been very solid with that top 6 forward group.

It's interesting to look back at things.
Do we even make that Lindholm/Hanifin trade if Bennett developed here?

Bennett was still very young, so yes.
I think the question is whether the Flames can make the Lindholm/Hanifin trade if Fox is willing to sign. For that, I think the answer is no.

I like the retrospect looks at what could have been, but we simply can't keep adding Fox into that, imo. He was not drafted where he should have been because he made it clear he wanted to play for New York.
What you got out of drafting Fox despite this knowledge was the ability to use him as an asset, which the Flames wisely did in the Lindholm/Hanifin trade. But you can't just put him into projected "what could have been" line ups, imo. It was clearly never happening.

The value of Fox around that time was said to be about a 2nd, which is what Carolina got for him when they flipped him after confirming he wouldn't sign anywhere but New York.
So I don't see how that trade couldn't have been completed with a different asset/pick in place of Fox?

They received two seconds from the Rangers.
I would imagine the Hamilton trade could have been completed with an asset different than Fox (seems Hamilton was the centerpiece), but it might have been closer to a first.
I still think Carolina expected to be able to sign him.

Ah, just went back and looked, didn't see the conditional third that became a second because Fox played 30 games or more in New York the next season.

Reportedly the Flames wanted to do the deal without Fox, so they could flip him separately for assets. However, Carolina insisted on his inclusion.

Hockey is weird, just over a year ago Bob was the Panthers 10M backup going into the playoffs and now he is their best player. Pens beat the Hawks in game 82 they are likely doing whatever it takes to dump Bob's contract last summer.
Oilers top goal scorer drafted by Florida
Panthers top dman drafted by Vancouver
Panthers top goalie brought to the NHL by Philly
Panthers top goal scorer drafted by Buffalo
It isn't unique to the Flames that players sometimes don't hit their ceiling with their first team

Let's not forget Marchessault given away to Vegas before reaching his peak.

There was a quote from Mark Messier saying that Sam Bennett was the most underrated player on the Panthers. And that he saw this last season. San Bennett is a terrific player.

Coloardo had MacKinnon. Eichel has been great for the Kings, but not a franchise level player. The rest of those teams didn't have a #1 centre who performed a role you couldn't replicate with wingers or overall depth.
IMO, the Flames had the players, they were missing coaching, leadership, proper player development, and a winning vibe.

What on earth are you going on about?
Brayden Point is an elite talent, in another lifetime he'd be in the conversation with names like Yzerman but he is overshadowed a little by Kucherov.
Washington had two number one centers. They may have declined now, but Backstrom and Kuznetsov circa 2018 were a pipe dream down the middle.
ROR is a Selke tier center, not unlike Toews or Kopitar.
Eichel isn't elite? Huh? He's more potent and effective than... probably any single skater in Flames franchise history

I have always been a big Bennett fan and am not surprised that he took off once he left the Flames.
I really think the Flames should have pushed hard for Sutter to come here in 2018 when they hired Peters. He would have had 4 runs with the old core and I am convinced Sutter would have figured Bennett out here. Benny even said when he was traded he really enjoyed playing for Darryl because he was given a clear role. When he was a top player for us in the bubble as the 3C to have Ward just ruin him the next year was frustrating.
Treliving made a horrible move in 2017 when he gave up a 1st and 2 2nds for Hamonic. He made a brilliant trade the following summer adding Lindholm and Hanifin for Dougie, Ferland and Fox but also made 2 bad moves by going with Peters and signing Neal which in addition to Hamonic were 3 moves that in hindsight really limited this teams potential. They made the playoffs in 3 of 4 years and won the division twice but looking at the talent they should have made the finals or even won

Will always love Bennett, the fact he's killing the Oilers right now is just adding to his legend. I really hope he and Chucky get to hoist the cup in Edmonton tomorrow. That will cement them in overall Flames lore for me lol.

Instead of building with Bennett/Tkachuk style, the Flames (Treliving) chose to go with the soft country club style of Gaudreau/Monahan
Not that it matters, he was never able to fill out the roster properly anyway
