Do the A's think that was deliberate?

IKF has been a very solid signing so far. Plus defence and a bat that while it lacks a lot of pop has some hit skill for average. Which is not bad for a guy hitting low in your lineup.

With the win the Jays now crawl out of the basement in the AL East and pass the Rays. That feels like a win considering how the season has gone so far.

1 game behind the Red Sox for third as well.

They aren’t great, but they’re not as bad as everyone here thinks they are.

Daulton Varsho = 2.7 WAR for $5.5 million
Gabriel Moreno (0.5 WAR) & Lourdes Gurriel (0.4 WAR) = 0.9 WAR combined for $26 million

What an absolute steal of a trade by Atkins

And as bad as Kirk is with the bat now, he still has 0.4 WAR while Jansen has 1.3 WAR so it's not like losing Moreno left a hole in the line up.

Too bad Bo and Vlad aren't doing what they're supposed to, and also too bad that Springer aged 10 years in 2 years.

That number would be a bunch higher if he wasn’t playing a bunch of corner OF to keep KK in there. If he’s fulltime CF (and he is a better defender than KK now) he’d be in the 3.5 range.

I get why they did it, but it's too bad they panic signed KK so early on, maybe they would have money to swoop in on Teo later on then they'd be getting much more value from CF and LF combined.

Yeah. I was not a big fan of the IKF signing but he's been good - better than I expected for sure. But the KK signing was a mistake imo, especially at $10MM/year. Totally agree it would have been better to save that money and try and make a big pickup later in Free Agency or even grab someone expensive at the deadline if you're in it.

I would have way rather had Jordan Hicks...

I doubt Teo would be doing as well here. It’s one thing to excel in a secondary role when you have Betts, Ohtani, Freeman and Smith in front of him. But when you have to put the expectations of having to carry an offence then those swings tend to get tighter. Sure I’d like him but I doubt he’d get anywhere close to those numbers.

As for the trade we know what Gurriel is. For a 4-6 week period each year he’ll be absolute fire and carry a team. For the rest he’ll look really awful and put in his usual below average defence.

So it’s Moreno and Varsho here. Moreno is a good defender at the most premium position but Varsho is the best defender in baseball at the second most premium position. So advantage Varsho there unless Moreno gets to be elite. Hitting they’re both flawed but right now Morenos hit tool is losing to Varshos power. And the cherry on top is Varshos base running which is also elite. They don’t win that game today if he doesn’t aggressively steal and get in with that sac fly. I do hope Varsho can channel his inner Adam Dunn and keep getting the walks. But I wish he could get that average up to .240 at least.

I agree Teo wouldn't be doin the same here, but he'd be providing more value than KK is IMO and then as mentioned, Varsho is likely providing more value as the full time CFer

So Kevin Pillar has been absolutely mashing with the Angels. Like his slash line is ridiculous. What a funny little career he has put together. Who knows, maybe a late career corner outfield slugger is his next arc.
I will always remember the comparisons between him and KK over the years. It's so apparent now that KK was miles ahead as a fielder and all the spectacular catches superman made back in the day were because of poor reads and routes that he managed to make up for. But it is interesting to see how KK has had continued employment with 8 figure deals and Pillar has had to scratch and claw for contracts.
