Unless you went to an academic private school of some kind, I have a tough time believing that's true. Maybe you just weren't socially aware.
I seriously doubt that 20 years ago or now, there's was ever a regular high school where popularity was determine by math ability.

This isn't rocket science. She's bad at math. We put her in a math program that allowed her to get accepted into the program in university she wanted while simultaneously getting high grades in that program that boosted her average, which helped her get accepted. We did everything right. Your advice/point/whatever it is these words are supposed to mean you keep writing is terrible. Just stahp.

Just for context, in BC you don't even need to do any Math 12 course to graduate. The compulsory math classes stop at grade 11 and you definitely don't need a math 12 class to get into a humanities program in BC universities. The only people I knew who took Math 12 were people who were planning on pursuing science or engineering degrees; I certainly didn't take it.
Now I don't know the differences in curriculum. Maybe what's covered in Math 30-2 in Alberta is similar to Math 11 in BC, but I doubt it.

So it's possible I haven't ruined my daughter's future?

I don’t think they’re referring only to math as an indicator. If you’re just an average student, you’re probably doing fine. Rather at the other end of the academic abilities spectrum, you’re probably perceived in a worse light than the brainiacs, if you have no other redeeming qualities.

I think you need like 8 math credits to graduate in Alberta as well. You don't have to have math 30 (or whatever the equivalent is these days).
And Sliver is absolutely right on this. If your child hates math and it's not their forte, should you really be encouraging them to go into a line of work where they have to do math regularly? Perhaps they could look at another avenue to spend ~40 years of their life? And he's also right that if you have no choice but to do the math, you can just do it at that point. It's not like there is a statute of limitations on a pre-requisite that says "you need math 30-1 completely prior to your 18th birthday".

Lol the replies i expected from the people I expected them from!
Pepsi, I peaked in university, not high school. Sorry you never got there.
Blankall, I wasn't talking about math ability specifically, but wormius got it. Some of you need to go retake LA-30 or whatever it is, your reading comprehension remains woeful.
And there's a wide gulf between kids that can pass regular academic courses (like math 30-1, which is the regularly prescribed track) and brainiacs. I was solidly a B student, but not in the remedial classes.

We were just talking about taking a single 30-2 course to get by, when everything else is good. We weren't talking about kids who are riding the short bus, require an entire remedial program or are failing out all together. Yes, I'd imagine that would make fitting in and maintaining confidence challending.

I don't know, if she's becoming a teacher she might have to take the dreaded "Math for Elementary School Teachers" course that my wife took in university. It's pretty tough to get through that one without knowing advanced calculus.

Okay, maybe it is. Is that a bad thing if my daughter is behind her peers in certain areas of academics? I don't think so; there's a lot more to her than her math grade.
I have a hard time following your logic that 30-1 would have been the smarter play for her, though. I think I'm a little fascinated at how you hold such a goofball position. I'm relieved she has me as an advisor and guide and not you. I can't imagine the pressure your tips and tricks would have put on her lol. Plus, she would have had a lower grade in 30-1 than she earned in 30-2, which would have lowered her overall average. That would have made university entrance that much harder. Plus, the extra effort required for 30-1 likely would have impacted grades in her other courses, thus lowering her average even more.
I think you're remedial when it comes to educational planning.

PM me if you need a tutor.
We had a good one that both my kids used for Math 30.

I very well may be a remedial education planner. I was giving an opinion, and relied on my more near term experience actually being in high school more recently than what I perceive for most of you. Unless Scorp cares to weigh in!
Anyways, that wasn't even my point. Just questioning the advice you were proclaiming about preferring social success- I think in the interceding time since you have attended high school, academic performance among peers has become more important to social status than it was previously. That was my main point.
You seem like a good Dad, I wasn't trying to attack you about that. Sorry if it came off that way. But really, is my opinion here different than on the last page when you are talking about how all your high net worth friends were remedial-ish students?

This new job I took in April 22 requires a lot of math & spreadsheets
I hired a dude to do both for me.
