Default The Cruel Fate For A Boy Named Osama

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/...n2917710.shtml

"It's not only terrible to see your baby going through this," his mother told the newspaper. "It's also the guilt you feel because I gave him that name and I chose that school."

Yep. Horrible news and pretty disgusting by these teachers. If true, hopefully these "teachers" get what they deserve.

No kidding. Unbelievable. The teachers? As adults, they should know better.

what's worse is that the majority of the first few comments I read below the article seem to be blaming the kid??

man, if a bunch of teenagers (who at this age are usually viscious without mercy) have enough sense not to tease this guy, what kind of ######ed idiots do these teachers have to be?

umm...the super kind of ######ed idiots. I mean, the most memorable torment he got from a teacher was "i thought you'd be in the back of a cave somewhere". That's the best those super ######ed idiots could come up with? Brutal.

In the article it mentions:
Osama now goes to a school with a special program for traumatized children. He said he is doing better and that when he turns 18, he wants to revert back to his given name

Is Osama not his given name? I read where it says that he prefers to be called Sam now- does that mean he goes by Sam and wants to go back to Osama? Or is there a different name?

I assumed it meant he goes by Sam now... and when he turns 18, he'll revert back to Osama.

I just don't get that. My given name was no where near as bad as that, but because of the teasing I got as a kid I almost never use it. Even things like my bank and my work have my adopted first name as my name.

I would definitely go by Sam if I were that kid. IMO those teachers should be fired.

How did they get through the system to become teachers. They should have been in the middle stopping this from happening from the other kids. But to be doing it themselves? Unreal.

And reading the comments about how he should have to change his name to fit in in america? How can you say that? Doesnt he live in the land of the free? He can call himself what he wants.

Reality is, the kid shouldn't have to change his name or go by another name because his name is the same as someone elses. He souldn't have to go by Sam unless he wants to. It's sad the connections some people can make in their mind. I mean, telling the kid not to show up because he's not going to pass because of his name? Unreal.

I have a cousin whose name was Osama, because of all the trouble at school he had to change his name ( he uses his dads name now), kind sad he was only 7 at the time. What horrible teachers

I know someone who is a teacher down in Virginia. Apparently this type of stuff from teachers is pretty common in the back rooms. Apparently at the school he works at there is a large contingent of teachers who blame everythign on the openly gay and lesbian students. Openly call them "That fag" or "the dyke" and things like that too the other teachers.

Now I knwo this isn't out in the open but it is still pretty bad and this tells us it's probably more common than we think.

to quote Office Space for the second time today "Why should I have to change my name? He's the one that sucks."

Absolutely unforgivable that teachers would do this sort of thing. If anything, they should be the ones setting the example. Kudos to his fellow students who actually sound like they have a clue.
