I've only driven through SLC, so maybe I'm missing a hidden gem, but it seemed like, if you're not hitting the hills, there's not a lot to do. I think if I were living somewhere warm, where you can golf year round, the move would feel pretty underwhelming.

All sorts of outdoorsy pursuits. Fishing, Hunting, Camping, Hiking, Mountain Biking. During the season, Hunting, Ice Fishing, Snowmobiling, and Cross Country Skiing would be available.

SLC is about as vanilla of a city that the NHL could find. There is nothing there and nothing around it, it is not a tourist destination, and does not have a hockey rich passed. Have a friend that played there way back when they were the FLAMES farm team, were lucky to draw 1000 fans back then.

People said a team in Vegas would fail, too.
Utah wasn't exactly a basketball hotbed when the Jazz moved there, either.

Speaking of the Jazz, they are just playing out the string, and still, their consecutive sellout streak remains intact.

What I meant is that all the drama overshadowed the players, who I always viewed as the underdogs. I supported them because I liked them and it felt like they were always overlooked.
|
When they first moved to Phoenix in 1996, they immediately became big spenders and were able to assemble an all-star team right out of the gates. It was like having another pre-salary cap New York Rangers team in the league. It sucked as a Flames fan because at the time, there was a real existential crisis for small market teams in Canada, and seeing the Jets leave to a large American market and contribute to that unlevel playing field, kind of sucked. I think that perception has always kind of biased me.
I guess I can see how in recent years, the Coyotes could be seen as league underdogs because the collection of players they assembled didn't have much of a chance.

The fear with Vegas was that every night thousands of tickets would be handed out as casino comps. The opportunity was being the first pro sport in not only a destination city but at, the time, the fastest growing city in the US.

And Vegas as a team has been incredibly successful. Be interesting to see what happens if they see some struggling years.

Vegas as a city probably doesn't suffer from the same nimbyism that the metropolitan Phoenix area does. In the Phoenix area, there are so many different players and none of the them want the hassle of a new arena in their backyard. Vegas strikes me more as a city with a culture where anything goes and more is always better.

Did I miss any jokes about them trading for Derek Ryan and naming him captain?

You've been a solid solid fan of this team and it's people like you I feel for. Much respect.
