Just don't let guys on LTIR play (In whole or in part) in the post-season. It closes the loophole and keeps everything else working as intended.
Simple: make it the same as of the last day of the regular season.

I suppose yes, but the idea I think is if they are ready to play clear them and add them to the roster on game 82- even if they still sit and watch and recover for another day, they are on the roster- only reason its not happening is because the team in question knows they have no budget room for them

It's amazing that people don't seem to understand this... it isn't that he is faking injury and waits until the playoffs to declare he's fine, it's that he is seriously injured but wants to play in the playoffs anyway.

When players on other teams do this, some fans call it cheating. When players on our team do it, fans call it heroic.

I don't see how the NHL can penalize teams retroactively with a cap recapture penalty as it went against the spirit of the salary cap, yet this seemingly obvious attempt to circumvent the salary cap for the playoffs is okay. I am not saying that Mark Stone isn't injured but the fortuitous nature of the consistent injuries allowing him to be back for the playoffs makes it seem suspicious.

And if it is heroic or not is beside the point. If they were cap compliant in the playoffs I would agree... but this just reeks when it happens every year. Find an NHL veteran who doesn't have chronic health problems that could put them on to LTIR.

But that's the point - players don't put themselves on LTIR because they - wait for it - want to play. It's literally what they do. The only reason Stone does this is because he can't play. If he played through the season, he would be in traction by April.

So he can't play one week ago... But is good to go next week. For the second (or is it the third) year in a row? I don't mind maintenance days/games but I have a hard time believing that he is able to go now.

The golden knights have a good team with or without him but this makes a good team a potentially great one.

The cap recapture penalty was negotiated between the NHL and the PA and is written into the current CBA.

Any remedy for this type of circumvention will have to be negotiated, and then written into the next CBA.

The league can't change this unilaterally.

This sounds like the lamentations of a fan whose team will probably be facing VGS in round one

Who is saying he's faking anything? He's not faking. Everybody knows he's hurt for real.

The cheating part is them bringing in other star players to fill his vacant cap space while he's deciding to sit out because he's hurting, and then being allowed to come back after the season is over because at that point there is no cap anymore.

Sucks to be him but if he can't "tolerate it" during the regular season then he shouldn't be allowed to play in the playoffs either, unless the team is still uder the cap. Hopefully the league finds a way to fix this.

Stone's been out since February, which was right around the same time trade talk started ramping up ahead of the deadline, and is now on his way back for the playoffs two months later (after doing the same thing last season and the season before (so they could get Eichel, but the missed the playoffs)).
So you’re making a comparison between similar injuries that happened almost a 1/4 of a century apart? I’m sure medical science hasn’t changed at all in that time frame.

And an uncommonly bad case at that.

Carey Wilson had to have his spleen removed after being injured in the Battle of Alberta in 1986. He was actually skating with the Flames again before the playoffs ended, and did not miss a single game the following season.

Note to those who think Stone is somehow cheating: Although Wilson was able to practise with the team during the '86 Stanley Cup finals, he was not cleared for contact, and admitted that he was in no physical condition to play:

I saw a report a couple of days ago that Stone, although cleared to skate in a non-contact jersey, is not expected to be medically cleared to play until the second round of the playoffs. If true, this makes nonsense out of all the ‘magic return on day 1 of the playoffs’ stuff.

I guess we will have to wait and see when he comes back.

I really didn't like it when Tampa did it either so I'm consistent.

The Canucks will more than likely be facing the Predators in the first round. The Knights will have to run the table to catch up and I don't see the Canucks passing the Stars.

That said I have no idea how the brackets work anymore with the wildcards.

Just saw that every team in the west outside of Nashville is using LTIR. Vegas is just aggressive and knows how to utilize it better.

Using LTIR isn't the problem. Using LTIR to stack up your team for the playoffs is. But that's on the NHL for overlooking how teams could abuse it when they made the rule.

It's really not that hard, if a team wants to carry players $20m over the cap so be it, but don't allow them to actually ice a team in any game over the cap.

That would pretty much kill most trades at the deadline.
