A Markstrom trade is still pretty likely this off season. If Markstrom is gone, I see a Vladar/Wolf combo as a likely tandem next year. That could mean Vladar getting more games than ever as a Flame.

Or trade both and sign a middle of the road vet. Maybe a goalie comes back in a Markstrom trade.

Hard to imagine Vladar could be traded until he proves himself healthy.

Why would a team trade for Vladar when they can sign that middle-of-the-road vet themselves?

Vladar is cheaper than the vet, and scouts apparently think he has upside. Calgary can eat some salary too. Vet is a stopgap for Calgary.

Vladar is going to be 27 this summer and has been statistically one of the worst goalies in the league for the past 2 seasons. Unlikely anyone trades for him unless they are giving up a similar player imo.

Flames have cap space and plenty of it. If a team like say, Ottawa, wants to move on from Korpisalo the Flames could take him and a pick in exchange for Vladar. Unlikely but there are scenarios that could play out where the team moves on from him.

He counts as a vet to play alongside Wolf.

Apparently scouts still think he's got potential.

I did that for the last 2.5 months so I can go to work through an infected jaw. Feels good to not be on painkillers even for a few days. Amazing how much pain and pills can slow down the mind.

Yes, but what are they willing to give up for that potential? Either a late pick or an equally flawed player who might still have potential but it's dwindling.

Playing backup and playing starter (or at least a 1B) is completely different from one another. I don't think there is anyone that can look at Vladar and definitively state that he is not starter material. I do think he has had great games, and he has had poor ones. Never really knowing when you start, and starting so infrequently, while also playing hurt? There shouldn't be any definitive conclusions at this point in time. I think what he needs is to make sure he fully recovers, and comes back next season fit and ready to split most starts.

Some guys can come in and do both backup and starter exceptionally well. Some goalies are great backups and terrible starters, and vice versa. A great example of this is actually Kiprusoff.

Season 1: 5 games 1.95GAA and .902SV%
Season 2: 20 games 2.48GAA and .915SV%
Season 3: 22 games 3.25GAA and .879SV%

By looking just at his numbers, it showed promise, but then him falling relatively flat on his face, especially comparing Nabokov's and Toskala's numbers straight across.

I am not saying that Vladar is going to be the next Kipper. Actually, I am not even saying he is going to be a starter, or will have any sort of NHL career. I am, however, saying that is very premature to state that he doesn't have starter potential. I am really hoping that it is Vladar's and Wolf's net this upcoming season and have them more or less split the starts. I think then we can better tell what Vladar is or isn't (assuming he is fully healed-up and fit).

I think scouts see a guy who is 6'5", plays sporadically for a team that has been pretty bad and has some really good games thrown into his record. He had great games against Edmonton, TB, Vegas, Minnie this year. Sometimes indiviual games sway views.

Well exactly. You're not getting much of anything for Vladar, maybe a late round pick.

If Markstrom is traded, it's really more about whether you want a more established guy to pair with Wolf as opposed to the return on Vladar.

Hopefully he has a quick recovery from surgery. For some goaltenders recovery is quicker than others.

Easiest situation is trade Markstrom to the team he accept to go and keep Vladar and Wolf.
If we keep Markstrom, we will be average team. Wolf will not get more games.
Just try Wolf Vlader conbo and hope 1 of them become true starter of the team. If not let's draft top 3.

Vladar is making $2.2 million. Even at 50% retained, there are equally good goalies on the market for less, and you don't have to give up assets to acquire them.

As for the scouts, I haven't heard that anyone but the Flames likes him enough to want to trade for him.
