Time will tell, but I hope the team turns off all communication channels on July 1st.
Plan this summer should be:
Trade Markstrom
Trade Mangiapane
Trade Vladar
Listen to offers on Kuzmenko, Coleman & Kadri for overpays
Sign a veteran goalie to tutor Wolf
Sign a RD (overpay Tanev if possible)
Sign a depth centreman
Thats it

I doubt they move Markstrom unless he very strongly wants out. They don't like to trade key guys under contract even when they should. They never get ahead of these things. Selling endings UFAs as a non-playoff team was a big deal for this club.
They're going to want a top 9 center and a #4 defensive dman.
I've been saying for awhile that theyre going to make a run at Stephenson and a guy like Dylan, Pesce or Tanev.
If they don't it's because they've traded some picks to fill one of these roles.
|
I think the fact that a Markstrom deal was as close as it was this year, means he's most likely getting moved. Conroy and ownership has clearly gotten on board with moving him, and if I'm markstrom I would want to just go somewhere else now as well

Thing about Reinhart, I think his best success has been as Barkov's winger, not as a centre. Calgary doesn't need wingers.

Oh I think we should be actively looking to move Kuzmenko... not just listening for overpays.
I don't think we need to sign a depth defenseman we have plenty enough depth defensemen under team control already (and odds are if we're trading several of Markstrom/Mangiapane/Vladar/Kuzmenko that some contract will be coming back to facilitate cap compliance) so I imagine any depth additions we may need/want will come in trade.
But yes I hope Conroy turns off his phone on July 1 and enjoys a nice Canada Day with the fam.

Only difference for me is, if we get any kind of offer on Kadri we should take it. I assume we get a shorter term bad contract back but I would not wait for an over payment. I'd would rather just remove the risk of his contract than worry about how good the return is.

I think Reinhart is proof of how much easier it is to play winger vs center in the NHL. One could also look at Lindholm and see similarities.

Reinhart eh? I really don't think the Flames need another 30ish year old winger with an 8 digit cap hit, but maybe that's just me.

with retention they would
Flames need to have some marketable players though...I know some of you want to go all Buffalo Sabres but its not happening, nor should it IMO.
Flames should be using all their cap space too IMO, why waste it? Take bad contracts with picks or overpay on short term deals

Kadri will have 5 years left after this season.
Backlund will likely retire in 2 years and Kadri can move into a 3rd line centre role easily.
His salary is fine now, and will likely remain the case even as his production declines as the cap will rise.
His contract is easy to buy out if necessary.
He is playing good now and mentoring our youth.
I would only move him if we were to get value. No need to sell for pennies.

Kadri is at least market value, I don't get why people still think he is overpaid

We need centers
The top C in UFA is Stamkos, he's not coming to Calgary.....and he's 34 so probably don't want him anyways.
Then there is Matt Duchene....he's 33, and again does anyone see him picking Calgary?
Then Monahan, I'd take him back on a 1 year deal but he just had a great year on a show me contract, he's going to get multiple years IMO
Then Henrique and Stephenson. Henrique, 34 and Stephenson is decent but won't be worth his contract IMO

Conroy likely has a better feel for the dressing room than previous management. He's got rid of the guys he feels like were passengers.
The Flames will likely be adding an offensive d-man, to help on the PP, and a vet. I think the Flames won't be handing out that 7 year contract though. They'll probably be bargain hunting somewhat for an offensive d-man willing to take a 4-5 years x 5.5-6 million contract.

I hope Wolf wins the Vezina personally

No kidding. Why would you want your 22 year old (hopefully) future goalie to suck?
Wolf actually being a star Vezina quality goalie would do way more for this franchise than getting high picks. It would at least be a sure thing, where as a high pick wouldn't.

It is a reallllllllllly dry UFA crop next year. Honestly Stephenson is the best of the bunch, and plays a solid centre. He could sit in 1C until Backlund retires, and then slide down to 2AB with Kadri (if/when an internal option takes 1C).
I wouldn't do eight years, but six years at Kadri money I'd be very comfortable with.

He's an elite powerplay scorer though, so I think it would still be a very interesting move by the Flames if he could be signed. From 2021-2024 I took a look at Reinhart's time in Florida.
On the powerplay with Huberdeau and without Barkov:
GF%: 100 (7-0)
Goals per 60: 0.13
xGF%: 93.16
PP with Barkov and without Huberdeau:
GF%: 90.53 (86-9)
Goals per 60: 0.18
xGF%: 92.76
5v5 with Huberdeau w/o Barkov (150:25 mins):
GF%: 47.83 (11-12)
Goals per 60: 0.07
xGF%: 56.42
5v5 with Barkov w/o Huberdeau (1235:19 mins):
GF%: 57.66 (64-47)
Goals per 60: 0.05
xGF%: 58.09
Obviously, Barkov is the best player of the bunch, but Reinhart and Huberdeau had some success together. Looks like they didn't have great luck scoring in the relatively short time they played together without Barkov but they still carried the play. Reinhart's numbers are excellent all around, with both Huberdeau and Barkov they dominated (70.38 xGF%) and without either of them he is still up there (58.26 xGF%).

Every other team knows this too, he'll have multiple offers and I highly doubt he picks the Flames over much else.

I'm not sure I see Reinhart reaching free agency so much as I see him taking a cut to stay in Florida where he has it so good. Remember, he came from Buffalo.

I wasn't stating it was what I wanted, just that it was the best case scenario for a high draft pick. I agree that having Wolf emerge as a legit #1 goalie is a better case scenario, although somewhat unlikely by next year.
