A yeah, a different kind of cheating for sure but still finding a way to cheat "within the rules"
Super clever alright. It'll be nice when they fix the CBA so teams can't legally cheat the salary cap with LTIR

Oh, there will be something new to exploit, I promise. Then I suppose we'll have to asterisk everyone's Stanley Cup not just for the last four years, the current year, and the next two years, but all throughout that CBA as well.
It will make us feel better for abstaining from participation. And having bad weather and taxes I suppose. Did I miss any excuses? The arena should be ready by then.

At least you'll be here to champion the cheaters as just being clever and ram it down our throats ad nauseum. Another lovely little thing to look forward to for sure.

They are being clever. I don't ram it down anyone's throats, certainly since we benefited from it in this instance.
Thanks to the Knights for the 1st, hopefully 2nd, and a serviceable D for 20 games of Hanifin. I'm not undoing the trade. I hope they go sweep Vancouver and/or Edmonton.

Haven't read the whole thread, but if they want to close the loop, then would they not have to give something up to the players?
I would imagine the LTIR overage or the way they are using it, gives the players as a whole a bit more. With the escrow they may get some of it clawed back, but I think the way it is right now is in the players favour.
So if that is the case, then the owners are going to have to hate it enough, that they will be willing to give something back to the players to have it changed.

GOAT!

I mean, the simplest and easiest change to implement is you can no longer use LTIR to acquire injured players.
(The fact you can even do this in the first place is beyond silly to me.)

I would think so, since it would seem that there are some contracts that exist only because teams are allowed to do this. So the players would be happy about the additional contracts and apparently 14 teams are doing it right now. I don't think too many stakeholders care.
The article linked in the OP has a quote from Friedman stating that "a couple" GMs are "not 100 percent comfortable".

Or such players count against the cap.

Nope.
Money paid to players on LTIR is counted towards the players' share of HRR. The total amount paid to the players after escrow does not change.

Signing a player to a contract beyond when they’re likely to retire was also whatever happy go lucky thing we want to pretend this is, and they ended that. The end.
|
You don’t care if it’s clever or not but offered up an opinion? Lol.
The teams who ran that scheme benefited from it while the teams who didn’t cried foul and eventually got their way. Now we’re on to this. And next it’ll be something else. A perpetual list of excuses for those who choose not to exploit the rules.

You obviously do not believe in fair play of any kind.

Fair play is playing within the rules, not playing within what you think the rules ought to be but actually aren’t.

Wrong. Fair play is playing in the spirit of the rules. That appears to be an entirely foreign concept to you.

You don’t think this matters at all and yet you’ve offered a couple dozens posts worth of an opinion. l…o…l?
Suggesting that people who play by the spirit of the rules and choose not to abuse them are making “excuses” is dumb. I mean, there’s penalties for “unsportsmanslike conduct.” Rules and respecting the sport is pretty much how the whole thing works.

Then don’t do anything unsportsmanlike or you’ll get a penalty. L…o…l.
Of course they’re making excuses. That’s why Las Vegas winning “doesn’t count”.
14 teams aren’t respecting the sport, then? Of the 18 remaining, how many don’t even care about the playoffs this year? So almost everyone who cares about winning is “disrespecting the sport”!

You keep throwing out this 14 teams bs yet there is not 14 teams that made LTIR moves only to add millions to their cap right at the deadline.

What teams have come out and said Vegas winning “doesn’t count”?
List the 14 teams in the NHL right now that have used LTIR space to acquire top players that will then have the LTIR players return for game 1 of the playoffs. Should be easy, so go ahead.

No idea. FanIn80 reported that there are 14 teams over the cap. So it only counts as cheating if they traded for someone at the deadline?

Everyone that uses LTIR is over the cap. Only a few manipulate their rosters to ensure that they can vastly exceed the cap with salaries on the ice post-season.
