Neither of those goalies got sold now did they?

My wife and I joke about everything being 50-50. It will happen, or it won’t.

Dawson Mercer averages 17+ minutes a night. He is 5th among devils forwards in ice time

I don’t think so. dgibb10 has been posting on that other site as a devils fan in Markstrom rumor threads for a while. I figure they signed up here mostly just to try to talk some sense into us flames fans as there really aren’t any on that other site

A team NEEDS a goalie performing to go anywhere.
It might not have to be at a Vezina level, but the middle of the pack for starters at the bare minimum in order to compete for the cup.
Without that, everything above the goalie collapses. They're absolutely integral, and New Jersey is learning that lesson this year.
|
Yes. Exactly. They are the least valuable asset because of the risk inherent to them.
You just said exactly what I said.
You need good goaltending to win.
But going out there and paying for a hot goalie doesn't guarantee you good goaltending going forward. Markstrom himself has been a big reason why the flames missed the playoffs in 20-21 and last year

So a Devil's advocate.
That means Spurs is still out there, and we have this guy running around talking nonsense? That's terrifying lol.

Anyone and everyone knows that Mercer is a large ask. Point is Flames don't have to and don't want to trade Markstom. Also, everyone knows that the Devils would be in the playoffs if they had a starting goalie. Tough to argue goalies aren't important, considering their roster and every hockey expert echoing the same sentiment. But hey, carry on.

I’d say there is a subset of the market who are somewhat fair weather. Anyone who has tried to sell tickets knows this. There was a time where selling tickets at full face value was simple but in recent years it’s been tough to give tickets away and that’s here on CP which has the most rabid Flames fans. We’re not seeing nightly sellouts, and I would expect the marketing team is doing what it can to get more fans to attend the game. You and I aren’t the issue, but the people who might attend a couple games a year.

Two of the last three seasons Vezina quality. That's about a good a bet as you're going to get as far as goalies that can be acquired through trade.
Either the Devils want to roll the dice on those odds or they don't. The Flames price is set.
Given that they continue to boomerang back says that they think Markstrom can be that guy.
Trying to argue down the inherent value of goalies to the fans of a team that is seeing first hand the inherent value of a goalie by the fact that they're still in the playoff hunt despite dressing a roster of journeymen seems rather tone deaf and counterproductive.
Time to deal with the reality that this is what their needed goalie upgrade will cost them.

That makes sense. I would be grumpy too if my GM sewered a chance at the playoffs.

Well to be honest Markstrom is worth significantly more than the young 3rd line centerman with potential. Had the devils made the trade a month ago they’d be very likely in a playoff position.

I’d be fine with Conroy throwing in a 3rd and a middling prospect if that’s what it took to get the trade done for mercer and a 1st

If Spurs came back you'd know immediately because they would make a statement like "x player is garbage" and when called out insist it's a fact.
