Default Getting a sofa onto a balcony

I need to get my sofa into my condo, but it won't fit into my front door. It will however fit into my balcony door which is 12 feet off the ground.

Does anyone know how I can get it up 12 feet onto the balcony. Is there a lift or pulley I can rent to do this, or do moving companies do this sort of things?

thanks for your help

Where is it getting stuck?

In my days of moving there's a few things I learned.

- remove everything you can. Legs, pillows, etc.
- Most often the couch will go in; usually 1 arm at a time. Position the couch so that it is almost upside down- so that if somebody was sitting on it and had their arm on the arm rest their arm would be pointing to the 10:00 position.
- Wiggle that arm through, and then move it into the apartment so that there is room again to move it once the other arm needs to come in.

Another option- can you remove the door to the apartment? I would think that would be easier than trying to hoist it onto the balcony.

If you have someone who can help you a drywall jack will do just fine for this project. Its cheap and usually can reach up to 16 feet.
I hope that helps

yeah, remove door and door frame if possible. probably a lot easier and cheaper and safer to do that than try to lift the thing 12 feet.

Is a dryawll jack an appropriate tool to use to hoist a couch? I don't know how many lbs a drywall jack is rated for, but lifting a couch with one seems excessive to me anyway.

I have no suggestions, but I will request that someone video the process and post it to youtube. A video of someone being crushed by a falling couch will be sure to get lots of hits.

Last time I tried that we lifted the couch on top of the U-Haul, backed the truck up so that the balcony beneath us was half in the trailer, and then handed the couch to the people on the balcony. Easiest thing ever, and only slightly hazardous to life and limb.

Does this remind anyone else of Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency (Douglas Adams)?

Specifically, the sofa the movers get stuck in the stairwell, and in an attempt to get it out they prove (via computer simulation) that not only is it impossible to remove, it was impossible to get that way in the first place.

My idea, get two lengths of rope, secure the rope to the bottom of the couch into the wood frame with screws. Or drill a hole right through the frame and tie in. Get two strong guys on each rope to lift the couch up, more more guys on the balcony to lift it onto the floor as it comes up.

Depending on the size of the balcony, two ladders with a man on each ladder carrying or pushing it up could work.
Two ropes, while standing on the balcony could also haul it up or maybe drive your pickup under the balcony and raise it from there. You may have to stand on the truck's roof.

12 feet isn't too bad; can you back a truck under the balcony? I would think that if you stood the sofa on end in the back of a truck it would almost reach the bottom of the balcony. If it did you could "walk" it up the patio rail and pass it to someone up there.

Not exactly the safest thing to do, but I'm sure it can be done.

That has disaster written all over it, never put yourself in a position to be crushed by whatever you're lifting.

Here's my alternative:

12 feet? Come on. Just lift it. I remember in my younger days lifting a couch onto a roof (10ish feet) by having a couple of guys lifting from the bottom and a couple guys pulling from the top.

Seriously though, YouTube it. It could be gold.

The Uhaul idea is the best so far if it's available/possible.

Otherwise, is there a balcony above yours or something to strap a pully to? If so I propose this:

I had to help a friend get a hide-a-bed up to a balcony once. It took a couple dozen beer, a half dozen young guys and some rope.

think of the fun you can have tossing the couch off the balcony when you move out, too. oh, and the ladder idea seems borderline irresponsible.
Also, youtube is a great plan. Also, if everything turns out as badly as it could, America's Funniest Videos is an option.
OT, but did anyone else see that email called "Why Men Die Early"? Basically footage of a lot of situations like this one that turn out about as badly as you could foresee. It's pretty funny.
EDIT: found the video...classic. Especially the guy getting hit in the face with the brick at the 1:00 mark.

That's pretty much what I did for a friend, minus the screws, which would have been a good idea.

The aforementioned video:
