If the deal was done, and then Fitz just tried to slide some retention in, well that's obviously stupid. I don't really buy that he would be that obtuse.
If the deal was not done, and Conroy decided to get Markstrom to waive because he assumed it was close enough, that's obviously stupid. I don't really buy that he would be that careless.
What I do buy is that Markstrom listened to all the leaks and media firestorm around it like any of us and thought he was getting dealt but then it didn't happen. That just seems like part of being a pro athlete if I'm being honest.

Markstrom isn’t being entitled though. He signed a long contract in Calgary and hasn’t asked to be traded. They may have approached him for a trade or might not have but it seems like he would have waived to NJ. I highly doubt he is making something up about management not handling it in the best way. The deal wasn’t done so he could be talking about how everything came out or him being told he would be traded etc and then it didn’t happen. We don’t know. He’s spoke highly of the room. Just because they make millions of dollars doesn’t mean they don’t have opinions. We don’t know who leaked the info.
The mistake he made though was answering the question. He should have gone to management.
But it’s not always defending the organization no matter what.

Since the summer Conroy and crew have been tight lipped about everything. Insiders have been throwing a lot of stuff to the wall hoping it sticks when it comes to the Flames cause not much was getting out. It's hard to believe all of a sudden they did that with Markstrom.

Sec and/or Diss… any word or opinion on the likelihood of this trade actually happening with the developments today (Lebrun’s tweets and Markstrom’s comments)? It’s been a rollercoaster with all of this. Would be exciting to trade Markstrom if it returns a first round pick.

Lets be real the Flames can't spend days or weeks negotiating a deal with zero idea if the player will waive
If that is the expectation of Markstom it is unreasonable. I get that he is probably pissed his two best friends are gone but again...play better (as a team)

Conroy and Co. are rumored to have approached him and it might have gotten to the point where he waived the NTC and he thought it was a done deal.
And then the deal didn't happen.
You'd be having family discussions about moving, trying to figure out logistics of things, etc etc. And then it's just a "Ooops didn't happen"
And Markstrom would probably have a lot more details about what happened and why the trade would have broken down than we did.
So it really feels like if Markstrom has frustrations with management there might be good reason for it.
|
I’m not seeing how any of that gives him good reasons to be frustrated with management. So they obeyed his wishes, which they didn’t have to but did to respect him, only approached him when the trade when was finalized and then the other team backed out. What were they supposed to do? Force NJ to go thru with it?

Is it careless? Markstrom has an NTC. At some point, out of fairness to the people he was negotiating with, Conroy had to find out if Markstrom would even waive. You don’t want to get to the point where a dozen people on either end of the deal are ironing out the fine details, financials, etc. and then tell everyone “actually, sorry, turns out he’s not interested in a trade - call it all off.”
It’s a tricky situation, because you have three parties that all have to come an agreement, and one of those - who can veto the whole thing - doesn’t get involved until late.

Devils are not a lock for the playoffs, wonder why Markstrom waives his NMC for them? Pretty much in the same boat as the Flames in term of playoff position.

Yeah, I don't know what's up with that. And losing to those same ####y teams under different coaching regimes.
Why aren't game fun and motivating even if you're playing Columbus or Chicago?

I don't think Markstrom has issues with the leaks to the media. I have a feeling that people would be more concerned about potentially being asked to waive his NTC and then the deal not happening.

Your are assuming NJ backed out...what if it was the Flames.
Markstrom and his agent would likely have that information based on needing to waive his NTC...so I'm just assuming that a guy who's never really complained in 3.5 years here feels like he has a reason.

Can't say I'm buying it. Seems like a lot of people have been involved (for the good I'm sure), but clearly leaks are getting out. I suppose Connie could've told parties he doesn't want any leaks and will only bring in particular individuals at various points but it's pretty clear there are leaks internally.

Honestly. Boohoo to Markstrom.
These trades are immensely difficult to make. Why would both parties work on and hammer out a deal for potentially months on end only to have Markstrom nix it at the very final stage? The negotiations advanced to a stage where they felt is was important to approach Markstrom about the potential of waiving his no movement clause. Both sides thought a deal was going to get done. Conroy has had his absolute hands full dealing with all of Toffoli, Zadorov, Tanev, Lindholm, Hanifn and Markstrom..
Be a professional, shut your mouth and play the game. That's your job. Let the business side figure itself out. At the end of the day he is still in total of control of where he plays. Throwing a shot a Conroy through the media isn't going to help the situation. Voice your frustrations beyond closed doors if absolutely necessary.

Sure but you're also dealing with an agent who acts on behalf of the client and can be involved all the way up to the point where markstrom signs the piece of paper. That is the last thing that needs to happen. And retention value isn't finer details that need to be hammered. It's a core part of the negotiation. There's no reason to get him to sign off until everything is done. And if you sign a piece of paper saying you're traded, you better be traded.

Fair. I’m going based on the rumours that it was NJ.
But if that is the case, I still think it’s a bad look to complain in the media about it. Shows a lack of professionalism.
He’s in control of this situation. If he wanted it to end, he could end it real damn quick. I’m not going to waive. Done. But he gives the ok to explore trade talks and now is complaining he doesn’t like the process?
That being said, I’ve always been against fans overreacting to media snippets. For all we know this is a 2/10 on his frustration scale and his “shot” at management was barely anything at all. Nevertheless, I think he comes across as a bit whiny.

Haha. That’s exactly what I was thinking when I wrote my post. I think his comments barely register and it’s not like he goes from consummate professional to embarrassing loser in my books. But it’s really hard to back him on this one given the current state of the team.

I can understand both the team and Markstrom. Hope he goes better team than us to win something at this time. But for team it's the best time to trade him. After trading Tanev and Hanifin his stats will get worse and his value will be lower. So better trade him somehow and take the best return on the table. And I think Wolf is getting tired waiting the team now.

I don't know why blame has to be assigned here.
Markstrom can be annoyed. This is his life and family. This is why some (not me) believe that players with NTCs should not even be approached to waive.
But that doesn't mean Conroy mis-handled it. As some have speculated perhaps the bones of the deal was done, Conroy when to Markstrom and then NJ asked for retention.
Deal's aren't done until they are done.
But to get the deal done they needed Markstrom to approve.
When you seek that is tricky business.
We saw how this was clunky with the Iginla deal too. They thought they had his approval for both the Pens and Bruins - until they didn't.
Doesn't mean anyone did anything wrong. Sometimes stuff just happens.
