Canucks radio is all gleeful about Petterson signing talks today. All the panic seems to be for nothing.

TBH I expected it to backfire, Pettersson told the Canucks he didn't want to talk during the season, a request many players make. The Canucks seemingly ignored that, kept trying, then leaked to the media they were frustrated he wouldn't respond, leading to a cycle of hysteria. Seemed like a listening problem on their end!
But if it works, maybe the Flames should have done the same with Gaudreau and just spent all of 2021-2022 pestering him for a contract.

I think Petterson didn't get why they were concerned and the team wanted some cost certainty. Plus he never said publicly during the past months he wanted to stay in Vancouver so he could have accepted a 1-year offer sheet on July 1st, and if the Canuckleheads matched, they'd not be able to trade him and he can walk for nothing at the end of it. Plus they'd likely have to pay him 13 mil rather than his 8.something qualifying offer for that year.
I completely get why they were worried, and am thankful we now have a GM who understands these dynamics as well.

I'd just call them melodramatic.

And no one outside VAN really gets worked up or cares much because it's all Leafs or Oilers out here, but in their little snow globe everything is blown way out of proportion. It's all self-inflicted.

So according to Friedman, these talks came about because the Canucks had an offer from the Canes that was in the "Hard to say no to" realm.
Canucks went to Pettersson and said "Come to the table or don't, but we aren't playing this game". They essentially called Pettersson's bluff and said "if you want out, we will move you now. If you want to stay give us an indication you want to stay."

After that Pettersson gave his agents the green light to start discussions. Things have moved rapidly from there.

Edit - rumours leaking out itay have been Necas, Pesce and a first

That's a pretty easy offer to say no, to actually. Not to say it doesn't have value - it does. But Necas, as good as he is, is not a superstar, the 1st is probably lae, and Pesce is UFA, I believe.

Hard to trade a player of Petterson's caliber for that.

It never seemed likely Peterson would want out with the team playing well, Vancouver is a Swedish player friendly city, laid back and on the ocean, a great place to be rich in and the team has a history of Swedish players being happy with life here.

Its hard to trade a player like Pettersson. End of sentence. You're never getting your full value back. But if you get a deal where you can stomach it and you don't have a choice, you do it.

Thankfully the Canucks had a choice.

Also, now it's coming out it may have been Koktaniemi, not Peace. You are still losing that deal

It would need to be more than that coming back. You won't get a top 10 player like Pettersson but you should be able to get back more than that mediocre package. Especially when the team is gearing up for what could be a deep run.

		| It’s been nearly a month since the Canucks pushed their chips in to acquire Lindholm in a trade with the Calgary Flames. GM Patrik Allvin paid a big price for Lindholm, the top available centre ahead of the trade deadline, sending a package to Calgary that included Andrei Kuzmenko, promising prospect Hunter Brzustewicz, and a first-round pick.
It was a move meant to put the Canucks over the top, but so far, the return has been rather underwhelming.
 |
---Lindholm probably takes off for Columbus in the off season.

Petterson at 12.5m/8 years, makes you wonder what Hughes contract will look like in 3 odd years.

Lindholm is trending to be the next Klingberg - turns down a massive deal by his club to sign-long term with them. Turns it down thinking the grass will be greener, and after he is done with Toronto this season, he might be out of the NHL.

Lindholm went from a "He does all the hard lifting and still scored 40 goals Mr. Selke" type of season, to one down year, than a worse year, than onto a different team and looking about the same. Someone has to be really desperate to give him a 8 year deal in the off-season. So glad that it wasn't the Flames.

Pretty brutal when the Flames top line looks better with Kuzmenko/Hunt and Sharangovich being forced into the middle than with him there. And Huberdeau looks the best he has as a Flame in Lindy's absence.

Yup, Lindy now pointless in 5. On pace for 50 pts. Whats the over under at now, maybe 6.5Mx6? Quite the far cry from the 9M+x8 he was asking the Flames for.
Probably low, but stock is falling.

Pretty strange to ostensibly bet on yourself, then dial in your performance to the point your teammates consider you a detriment to the team. Then get a trade to a contender and flop.

Now that Elias Lindholm has completely soiled himself and certainly has eliminated the possibility of a longterm contract in the 8 million plus range I wonder if there is a market for him to sign a one year deal with a team for 7 million a year to try to rehabilitate himself. That team could then trade him at the deadline and recoup assets.

It only takes one team to ignore his play this season for him to get a 6 year deal but the money isn't going to be anywhere near what the Flames reportedly offered. Not sure if his agent gave him bad advice or not but I'm not sure he saw his client fall off the face of the earth in a contract year. The guy is having a really poor season and more concerning for a center is that he's been paired with a bunch of different wingers over the years and he's only really gelled with Gaudreau, Tkachuk, and Toffoli to a lesser extent. Seems like he's not developed any chemistry with his wingers in Vancouver so far which is a continuation of his issue in Calgary.
