You CAN be too greedy sometimes. That said, I still do believe Tanev should be able to fetch a 1st I’d think.
I would guess that other teams are waiting on Calgary to move their pieces. If you want to move Sean Walker you probably need at least one of the Calgary dmen to move first because the teams that might want Walker want one of Hanifin or Tanev more. Same probably goes for goaltenders. I doubt it is teams are waiting on Conroy to get back to them.

I would be shocked if Tanev can't bring back a 1st. Don't worse depth dman get traded for 1sts every deadline?

Solid player but not sure there is anything more than a bottom pairing defenseman there.
You’re right. Lundell is a former 1st. But Hanifin is a former top-5 pick. Anyways, we can just say you win if you’d like.

The vast majority of the best players were right around deadline day.
Arguably the top forward (O’Reilly) was moved 16 days out and the top d-man (Orlov) 10 days out. The big fish move early because serious bidders want to get out ahead of it, and sellers don’t want to be left without a dance partner.

It’s not time to worry yet. But it won’t be a great sign if Tanev and Hanifin are still on the roster this time next week.

It's a gross thought sending Tanev to the Oil. He would instantly double the collective hockey IQ of all 3 pairings.

But Edmonton just might be the best place for minimizing the risk of him signing before July 1. We can afford a UFA overpay now, he just has to get there. How great would it be to send Morin or Brz or even Parekh/Buium out with Tanev? Fairly sure he can hang on long enough for Morin at least.

No, no, your opinion is valid and good. It just felt like I was in an argument, so I forfeited.

So in your mind Hanafin is worth significantly less than Lindholm? Interesting

You know a loss will go on your permanent record.

Call me crazy but I have a gut feeling that something is going to happen following today's game against the Jets. Don't think it will be a huge trade but I think I could see the Tanev deal going down today. Just a hunch.

Lindholm and Hanifin for 1st, player, prospect
Hanifin for a 2nd

See what happens.

Biggest thing is avoiding extensions on 29 year old players, and facing the fact that they needed to make changes.

The Lindholm trade likely makes the total for all three work out at or above expectations.

Markstrom the interesting variable.
Markstrom for me is a clear win if we pull a 1st round pick + cost of any retention. We’ve got the organizational depth and the players age/contract situation doesn’t align with the team’s vision - so extracting a 1st + value for any financial considerations is a clear, and massive “W” in my eyes.

Anything around that and I think we can all sit back much in the way we did with the Lindholm trade and think “wow, impressive work by Conroy”. I think the idea of pulling a Mercer or Holtz is a bit of a pipe dream because there just isn’t a trade in the market that has happened like that before/in recent years. I think extracting a 1st + for a 34 year old goalie is an absolute massive W at the end of the day.

Interesting that Friedman is toning down Calgary trade talk. I assume this is Conroy asking for some room and laying off Marky in particular. Quid pro quo might be anything that comes from Friedman exclusively in the next while is right from Conroy.

I mean, he isn't toning it down. He wanted too because he doesn't think it's fair to keep cycling their names through the rumour mill, but he had to bring them up again because all eyez on us.

I look at Hampus Lindholm’s trade as an estimated value for what Hanifin should return. It was a 1st + 2 2nds, + a very recent former first round pick at the time Urho Vaakanainen.

If the return is significantly less than that, it would be a disappointment.

Elliotte Friedman talks about Hanifin and Tanev on 32 Thoughts this morning.

On Tanev, he says there are a lot of teams interested. The Flames would trade Tanev if they were offered a 1st. Mentions some specific teams. He mentioned Toronto has offered a bunch of picks, none of them a 1st, and the Leafs don’t have a 2nd until 2027 (barf). He also discussed the Canucks, that they like the idea and don’t want the Oilers to get Tanev. Friedman them focused on the Oilers…

On Hanifin, he says the list of teams around Hanifin is growing because teams see where this is headed. Marek talked about Dallas and NJ. Friedman focused on two teams: Boston and Florida. He says these two teams are ahead of Tampa Bay and Toronto in what they can, or they might be willing to offer, not because of picks, but because of young players. He specially mentioned that Anton Lundell’s been thrown into things at times this year.

He didn’t have a lot to say about Markstrom. But he said Markstrom’s frustrated.
Yes. Make it happen.

Seravalli on the DFO podcast this morning really paints a bleak pic for Hanifin's return suggesting that his side is trying to steer Calgary to move him to Tampa where he wants to sign in the off season. The thought being it limits what other teams would want to spend knowing Hanifin likely won't sign there.

Flies in the face of what Friedman is saying though.
