Because he only has a year left on his deal.
So you either extend him (unlikely considering his performance) or you cut the losses now and find a new GM so you don't have a lame duck GM next year

That’s gotta be the toughest gig in the U.S. Keeping your stars is improbable and signing UFAs even more challenging. That said, team needs a new perspective because what Jarmo has been doing hasn’t worked.

It wasn't long ago (maybe 3 seasons?), when many on this very board hyped Jarmo up as a great GM for putting in place all these great pieces like Sillinger, Johnson, etc. They have 19 and 16 points respectively lol.
