If NJ is upset Conroy is doing his duty to find the best deal, then it just shows they’re not confident in their offer.

That’s their issue, not Conroy’s.

What? How could you possibly come to that conclusion?

It's a perfectly sensible conclusion. If you have goods to sell, you are not under any obligation to talk to just one buyer. If one customer wants to keep you from talking to any others, it is a strong hint that he is trying to pull a fast one.

In private negotiations, if you have a strong offer you have no fear of it being weighed by the counterparty against competitors. That’s all Conroy is doing here. He’s not exposing NJ’s offer to competitors, just allowing competitors to provide one last best offer in a blinded fashion.

If NJ is afraid of their offer being confidentially weighed against competitor offers, then it just says they’re not confident of their package.

Next time you’re bidding for a house in Seattle, let me know if you want the seller to decide only on your bid or if you’re ok with them returning to market and see if your bid is the best.

One speaks of confidence, the other speaks of someone worried they’ll be outbid.

You have no reason to conclude that's the situation here based on what's been reported.

It's equally likely NJ puts the screws to Conroy if he decides to circle back.

This isn't a forced sale, there needs to be a willing seller and a willing buyer.

Your ability to read some level of insecurity into NJs offer is really something else. Then you double down on your awful take by trying to pull me into your fantasy by purporting to know anything about me by quoting where I live and knowing if I'm looking for a house.

Apart from you, the loser in all of this is Markstrom. I can't imagine how he feels being asked to waive his NTC if the Flames weren't willing to make the trade happen.

It’s not that deep dude. Take a break

Flames can take their time trading Markstrom. If this scenario being discussed ACTUALLY happened (cuz we really don’t know) then I am glad the Flames didn’t get pressured into a deal with the Devils. If the Flames felt the need to check with other teams I would imagine they believe they can get more. Half the league can use a goalie, his value will hold into the offseason.

The poster you were responding to made good points. No need to get so offended in a rumour thread.

It's a pretty big leap of logic to conclude that NJ isn't confident in their offer.

Maybe it's not a confidence thing, but one shouldn't let emotions get in the way of what should be a decision based on logic.

Kevin O'Leary taught me that

Why are you hell bent in taking limited information and jumping to the least favourable conclusion from a Flames standpoint?

Just makes zero sense to me.

Do you not want to like the team you follow?

In the absence of fact I certainly don't try to backfill misery!

LeBrun disputes Markstrom was ever asked to waive NTC

https://www.tsn.ca/nhl/countdown-to-...-ntc-1.2075829

"What was not presented to Jacob Markstrom was this question, 'Would you waive to go to New Jersey?' And so that tells you a couple things," LeBrun explained on Insider Trading. "One, that those trade conversations didn't escalate to the point where it got to that juncture. It also asks a couple of other questions, which is why didn't it? And one of things we found out on this day was that there seems to be a discrepancy between the two teams about how much money either team should be paying Jacob Markstrom, which is to say that the Devils would want Calgary to retain some of the salary left on Markstrom's contract in any trade.

"He's got two and half years left on his deal at $6 million a year, so you can see why the Flames aren't too interested in that or at least if they were going to contemplate that, can the two teams agree and what kind of price that would cost. So, who knows if this thing is dead or not between the two teams, but certainly the Devils still need to upgrade their goaltending position."

Devils are in a bit of a pickle because the organization hasn't done a great job of complementing a talented team with solid goaltending. I find it funny that a GM would halt progress on requiring that missing piece because of hurt feelings. If that's what's going to keep Fitzgerald from improving his team then IMO he's a pretty terrible GM.

Great example of why we shouldn't just run with Friedman/Seravelli opinions as 100% fleshed out fact.

This suggests some of their "knowns" weren't known.
