I say let the Devils continue their rebuild then. They will be close to a competitive team with a couple more top 10 picks.

3 year retention on a starting goalie is bananas… I feel like that’s really being undervalued by CP. I can’t even think of a comparable trade.

2 full seasons. Don't think this year matters much on the retention front.

The Devils are fully rebuilt. Got killed by injuries this year.

How much would he have to be paid to have zero value?

Nothing should be off the table for the Devils. Markstrom could actually help them win the Cup.
I think Mercer + 1st isn't even enough for that in exchange for Markstrom and that's why I suspect the trade isn't done.

I just can't see it.
Markstom is 34
Mercer is 22
Markstom is playing like a top 5 goalie now but likely starts to show his age in the last year of the deal.
Mercer is still developing and will likely continue to get better for the next 2-3 seasons. Mercer will also likely be a solid contributor to the team for the next decade.
Lastly, there may not be a rush for the Devils to push all thier chips in now as most of thier team is still developing and getting better. Markstrom is a key missing piece though but I don't know whether they are willing to part with a player like Mercer.
If ever Conroy pulls this off (1 for 1 even) he is an absolute legend.

I said they are waiting for a chance. And I'd rather use the $6M-league minimum elsewhere on the team.

Am I crazy or can the devils easily fit Markstrom in this year and next with the guys they have out if they just send Vanacek back… which seems like a no brainer for both teams
I guess I don’t understand why retention is a sticking point in a deal

I can see getting Mercer back but only if the deal includes hanifin and Markstrom.
Moving 22 year old mercer for 34 year old goalie is tough to swallow. But a 34 year old goalie and a 27 year old top pairing D would be worth it.
He's a good young player but hes a sacrificiable aseet if theyre improving the rest of their roster. They'd still have hughes, hischer, bratt, meier and Holtz in the top 6 for the future. Marstrom would nail down their goaltending for the next few years and Hanifin gives them a top pairing D for the better half of the next decade.
I think
1st+mercer+bahl+2nd for hanifin+markstrom makea each side flinch but also solves alot of problems for both sides

Way more than 6.8% of the cap next year falling to 6.5% of the cap in his final year. Not sure what the number is, call it somewhere around 10% of cap.

Not enough. The 1st+Mercer gets you Markstrom value wise. So you are going to trade Noah Hanifin for Bahl and a 2nd? Conroy would have to be drunk to do that.

And if you're a devils homer it's an overpay (I've chatted with a few about it).
Well it's a package so you can't break it down exactly as value bleeds over for individual pieces but if you're deadset it would more be:
Hanifin for 1st(currently 13th oa by points, 16th oa by pts%) + Bahl
Markstrom for Mercer + 2nd

Are we really suggesting that a 34 year old Markstrom holds the value of Mercer and a 1st?
Conroy would be an absolute trading savant if he pulled that off, but let’s atleast be somewhat realistic here..

I think we're suggesting that the Devils may be that desperate for a real #1 goalie, and there are very few of them on the market.

Or either? Hah.
Step right up, only $14 million, folks. And as a bonus, no retention!

This I just struggle to see. Without retention, I could see one of those pieces. With some sort of retention (15-25%)? Maybe both.
There just isn't a precedent set that dictates Markstrom has that much value, and as a 34 year old I don't see teams viewing him as a long term solution.
Three playoff runs? 1st + 2nd is the value I see.
Would love to be pleasantly surprised, but I just don't see it.

Yes he does with retention, why? Because Flames are trading from a position of power. Flames do not need or want to trade Markstrom, but they could do it. Flames do not need Mercer, they could get a different comparable player down the line, or draft him or whatever. Flames are not competing this or next year. Devils need Markstrom, and they do not particularly need Mercer.
Devils without Markstrom, aka an elite goalie, are not making the playoffs and are wasting their contention window. Devils with Markstrom are a better team.
Ya you could trade for a different goalie but who is better that is available? You would be trading for an average goalie that you hope would solve your issue, well what if he does not, then you waste more draft capital and more years of their core.
A goalie who is playing like Markstrom is this year can win you a cup
