As far as I know there is no CP prize for doing so. Unlike guys like Freidman and Seravelli we certainly are not getting any monetary gain. There is no award for garnering the most thanks. What you do get is a lot of posters accusing you of making stuff up or being a liar even though there is no logical reason to do so. So why would we share things we hear? I can't speak for the others but for me it's because for the most part I love the community on this board. It leads to discussion and gives everyone things to talk about. Not everything is going to come to fruition we hear.
As far as making these contacts I have been an avid hockey fan for 40 years. When I was younger I spent a lot of my tim with my uncle who worked in the Toronto Sun's sports department and he would take me to hockey events and as I got older his friends in the industry became my friends. Through him growing up as a Flames fan I got to meet all my heroes at one point or another. I am a very social person and in person I have one of those personalities that makes it easy to make contacts and friends. I have been on this board pretty much since day 1 although I think I might have used a different username then. I was on the Flames mailing board before that, I think a guy named Alan Caldwell ran that if I remember correctly. I wonder if he is on here. It's funny because I love ragging on Craig Button on here for his time as GM but that guy would answer every email I sent him during that period and we would get into some pretty amazing arguments! I wish I still had those emails! My point is I have been around it a long time and you meet people and you make friends and acquaintances. I have said before, I am not an insider, I don't do this for a living but if I hear something I will gladly pass it along because I like the community and it adds to discussion on the board. If you choose not to believe me or don't like it that's ok, your perogative. I just don't understand what makes you think someone would claim to know information they don't when there is no reward for doing so.
|
If you're referring to my specific comment, that seems to have started all the outrage. I was asking an actual question: when have you or Sec reported something that was "imminent". I specifically added that I'm not saying that you don't have insider info.
It could be for multiple reasons, like you potentially not wanting to burn a source. That said I don't expect either of you to report something like a trade ahead of guys like Friedman, which is perfectly fine by me.
As an aside I sometimes have a hard time figuring out if you're stating a source or expressing an opinion. For example you posted this after Dreger reported Brzustewicz was a part of the Lindholm deal.

It could've been your insider info(which turned out to be partial), or you taking a stab in the dark, and speculating like the rest of us.

When you guys post what you hear, the vast majority of people read/skim these threads and don't post anything. I am sure your info is appreciated by 95% of the folks who read your posts.
Sadly Its the vocal 5% that will always want to cast their dark cloud on things. Unfortunately their opinions stand out in the crowd - most people that appreciate you don't really say anything (with the odd exception).
Keep doing what you're doing! The Sour grapes will always be there no matter what you do

I’m a little lost why the difference between these two things matters.
I don’t entirely know why people get worked up about any of it, but I don’t understand that one at all.
It’s all information. You can’t take it all as personal opinion or take it all as inside information and it makes literally no difference to anything at all. We’re talking hockey, here… as fans… what difference is it going to make?

I for one get super jealous that there are people out there who live different lives than I, and who know different people than I. It helps me to pretend that they are making it up for internet cred…

Oh my god Jesus Christ whoooo cares. Have info make up stuff none of it matters. As long as everyone’s having fun that’s great, it may help to remember that in life not everyone is gonna be your friend and that’s ok.
Now we gonna trade Markstrom or what? With the failed NJ talks are out there that had to be done for a reason didn’t it

What's a good top 4 D target to trade Mangiapane for in order to soften the blow of potentially losing both Hanifin and Tanev?
I wonder if that'd be something Conroy would have up his sleeve to keep the team competitive while also dealing UFA's for mostly futures?

He might get you an underperforming top 4 D who could potentially benefit from a change of scenery, from a team with fairly deep D but would like to add a top 6 winger who also could benefit from a change of scenery.
That Dman would also have to be overpaid and about a year or so from free agency. Probably not a lot of options out there for sure.

The only problem I have ever had with any of this is the problematic after effects of "insiders":
- when people shut down all other speculation because "it doesn't match up with what ____ said" yeah but who knows if that's true? Also, it's killing the fun.
- when the "insiders" make glib comments and try to shut down conversation. Dissentowner has repented for this, and I'm sorry for bringing it up again, but an example is exactly with him saying "don't bother speculating about Vancouver for lindholm" in the trade thread when people were proposing the exact trade that ended up happening a week later. If you're going to present as an insider, people are going to problematically take your word as gospel, so you have to act more responsibly imo.
- when we spend pages of thread debating about the insiders, or when people make post after post appealing to their authority or demanding an update.
Anyways, y'all do you just try not to stomp on other good parts of the boards while "having fun" or whatever.

Personally, I don't really care. I've only run across a few "insider" tidbits personally, and mostly I don't share them because if it's in confidence I won't, and if it's not, I will.
I find it way more fun to post "insiderrrrrr" comments.

Well, sure, on the outside looking in, preparing the taxes of employees of the Flames appears incredibly exciting, but I can assure you it's not.
