Honestly, Hanifin has handled himself as an absolute professional. He’s shown up and played extremely well this season and quite frankly deserves every penny he is given. He has progressed nearly every year in Calgary and is second on the team in time on ice and leads the league in shifts.
He has every right to take his time with this decision and I believe him and the team have a mutual respect there to do this the right way.
I really don’t get all the malcontent here. Trust that there is ongoing dialogue between the two sides and Conroy will do the right thing if and when the time comes.

That could be recency bias though. Has he turned some corner or is this a contract year bump. I have always liked Hanifin but viewed him as rather replaceable.
Conroy and company should know him better than anyone. No matter what happens it sure seems like they'd prefer to have him back. Just based on what little info drips out, they're trying much harder with him compared to Lindholm, Tanev or Toffoli.

I think he hit another level in the 2nd half of last season.
Just seeing more of the same this year from the player.
He's a top pairing defenseman in my books, all day long.

Not saying this is the case, but things have changed drastically since then, so a change of heart isnt out of the realm of possibility.
That being said, its pretty likely he is going to be moved.
This team will sorely miss him though and will spend years trying to find a replacement.....hopefully they can do so internally.

And that's the key thing, unlikely any time soon. They've got some interesting prospects but no one that is going to step into a top pairing role any time soon.
I'm fine with either scenario. He's a guy that you can sign and feel confident that it's not going to be a terrible contract because his floor is so high, and his skating will keep him good for a long time.
Or trade him for a nice return.
the good thing is that this is the debate. That there doesn't seem to be a risk of walking him to UFA and losing him for nothing.

I guess I was thinking it’s like Gaudreau, which kinda seemed obvious at that time too. Or the many many many many other players in contract years. So basically in contract years these guys magically perform amazing and then after they sign gigantic multi year contracts where they have inter-generational wealth guaranteed they don’t really have as much motivation. Pretty simple. Seems to happen to almost major contracts / players. Gaudreau contract year? Amazing. After signs big contract? Terrible.
Not all players are like that, but most are. Hanifin is in a contract year. So how will we know? When his play drops off in subsequent years because he’s gonna get some stupidly massive contract.
I also never said he hated Calgary so people are kinda making things up. I said the thing he will care most about is money, which is probably true for the large majority of people. It’s not even really a criticism, it’s how people are and how the business / world works.
You don’t have to be a doctor psychologist to form these opinions. They’re just opinions formed out of understanding basic human motivation and then noticing he’d rather go play in the States and also some of his American friends all peaced out. It’s not some grand conspiracy and I’m not Nostradamus. It’s just a gut feel based on the entirety of what I know and seeing what’s happened in the past and how he’s engaged with the flames in this contract extension, plus him indicating he’d rather leave. It’s really not rocket science. He probably will sign a giant contract and stop caring, like 80%+ of all NHLers.

Sure, same thing with Tkachuk and Lindholm, however Flames need to make hard decisions
If the player is on the fence after this length time
Its really time to move on.

Conroy isn't going to let him walk for nothing. 8x8 would be too much IMO but not a major mistake either. He should bring a decent haul especially if a team can work out a extension in principle. Not really worried either way.

You're walking things back quite a bit from
Lukewarm to Calgary
He'll stop caring when he signs

I think your understanding of human motivation is quite shallow
Most experts agree that once humans have “enough” money, whatever that is, enduring motivation is driven by other factors such purpose, autonomy, and desire to master their craft
And how much elements like that matter to each of us can differ.
But money itself isn’t a source of long term or sustained motivation

To expand slightly.
If Hanifin is a purpose driven individual, and wants to win a cup, he's probably wrestling with whether he sees this happening in Calgary. On the other hand, with the Flames he's likely going to be a top pairing guy for the bulk of the next contract, which may tick the box if he cares about being having the biggest opportunity to play at the top of his game.
And then of course you have the x factor which is unique to pro athletes - which is where do they want to live and have their family live.
To try to boil it down to money-driven motivation is extremely narrow minded.

Haha yes, I’m aware other things motivate people.
And yet, contract years do still tend to bring out the best in a lot of players. So, can’t be totally off base.

Nobody ever has enough money. That’s true for 99% of the people whether you are a millionaire or on welfare

Money seems to grow on trees. In the great plains of Canada, there's only snow, wind, and grass. So, this is why hockey players and other athletes go where there are trees.

But it’s also not the primary motivator for most

Usually it’s a combinations of factor. If money is not a primary, it’s still a big part of the decision.
