Given the signatures must be physical, yeah, this goes nowhere. I also thought it was interesting that it must be signatures of eligble voters, and number of signatures required is 40% of Calgary's population, ignoring that the total population includes people who are not age of majority and thus not eligible to vote. The bar is quite high.
With that said, I can't say I wouldn't sign it... I regret placing my vote for Gondek, but it really was a vote against Farkas.
I'd sign one for Danielle Smith the moment it was shown to me.

I am not a huge fan of Gondek, but this feels like a "the devil you know" situation. Imagine what backwards hick the TBA will run and our idiot Premier will endorse when given the opportunity.

Municipal recall legislation is as useless, as my dad used to say, as tits on a boar.

It was designed that way, the UCP didn't want any possibility of their MLAs being recalled.

For a long time, I thought the saying was "as useless as tits on a board", which would be pretty useless too.

TBA already ran their sh-te candidates and got shut down rather nicely (aside from McLean, more on that in a moment).
I personally would rather roll the dice on who replaces Gondek than stay with her. The whole "devil you know" thing is a good part of why the federal Conservatives can't win an election, aside from choosing bad candidates (or choosing okay ones and then whipping them until they are garbage). Given Calgary's weak mayor system, I'd happily swap out Gondek for a 10lb bag of potatoes with googly eyes on them at this point.
What does really worry me about Gondek's performance and keeping her around is that it's easy for people like Dan McLean to use her constant missteps as favourable contrast -- ammunition for him being considered a 'reasonable' voice on council. McLean even being dubbed part of the 'Sane Six' is evidence enough that Gondek's woeful performance is elevating he who should be considered the second worst person on council after Sean Chu (who is also part of the same 'Sane Six' which should tell you how bad the problem is).
To herself, Gondek is a net-negative, but I think her ability to say the wrong thing and focus on the wrong priorities ends up giving a boost to the people on council who have zero business being there. And I hate to say it, but I think if there's anyone who feels particularly positive about their chances to get back into council, McLean might just be it, and he has the mayor and councillors like Walcott and Penner to thank for it.

too bad it's not 40% of the total number that actually voted, or 40% of those that originally voted for her

Do we on here? No, of course not. But this forum is not representative of the electorate that could be swayed to vote for pond scum like Dan McLean, either. The fact that anyone can even make a case for such a label is indicative that Gondek is not doing us any favours.

Since curves2000 posted it in the wrong thread:
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calga...tion-1.7108351
While candidates in the election were limited to accepting donations of $5,000 or less from individuals, TPAs could collect donations up to $30,000 from corporations, unions and individuals. Two of the TPAs, Calgarians for a Progressive Future (known as Calgary's Future) and Fluoride Yes, had earlier voluntarily released their donor information.
Calgary's Future received $1,708,826 in the years leading up to the 2021 election. There were six contributions, all from civic unions like the Amalgamated Transit Union and two locals with the Canadian Union of Public Employees.
Calgary's Future endorsed numerous candidates in the election, including Jyoti Gondek, who was elected as mayor, as well as several now serving councillors.
The other major TPA in the election was Calgary Tomorrow, which backed the candidacy of former councillor Jeff Davison, who was running for mayor. He finished third in that race.
Calgary Tomorrow raised $422,158 in donations from 176 donors. Many of those contributions come from the corporate sector, including numerous companies connected to the property development industry and the oilpatch.
That took a long god-damned time to get that data.

We definitely need reform around campaign financing and disclosure. I think that’s provincial jurisdiction is it not?

I'm still not a big fan of Sharp as she is my Councillor but it is great to see her saying this stuff:
Quote:
Sharp says the following.
“The most important thing, as a leader in these roles, you need to park your ego.
“If you can’t park your ego then it’s not the job for you.”
Ouch.
Sharp has more to say in this short conversation. Let ‘er rip.
“She should be questioning her leadership and stop blame-shifting,” says the northwest Calgary councillor.
“She’s pulling at every string she can to make herself look good in so many ways.
“I would be questioning my leadership if I was her. But I’m not.”
Sharp herself is frustrated.
“I understand the frustration. I think the frustration is real. I don’t think we’re focusing on the right things and Calgarians know that.
“Calgarians are not stupid and so what you see now is the frustration coming to the forefront.”
Sharp goes on to say how some people on city council when they’re speaking in public are “very patronizing.”
Too true. And the councillor is being polite.

She's already running for mayor, and spoiler: she won't be any better at it than Gondek. Maybe even worse.

I don't really see how she'd be worse than Gondek. I'm willing to have my mind changed, but Gondek's only redeeming quality was on election day where her election prevented a then-woefully inadequate and compromised Jeromy Farkas from getting in as mayor.
