Plural of Beer

I've been keeping the 's' in 'beers' since 1997 and I will argue to my death that 'beer' is not a plural. I think it sounds absolutely stupid when someone says "I have two beer" or "I bought 12 beer". It sounds like trailer talk to me. I know lots of people stand by that being proper, and it always makes for a good argument that goes nowhere.

I'll present my opening evidence:

beer

noun Definition: 1. drink brewed from malt: an alcoholic drink brewed by fermenting malt with sugar and yeast and flavoring it with hops

2. quantity of beer: a drink or glass of beer

I agree with this line of thinking. If I bought two or more tomatoes, I would say "I bought tomatoes at the store", but if I bought two or more cases of beer, I would say "I bought beer at the store"

"I bought beers at the store" just doesn't sound right to me...

Edit: However, "Let's grab a couple of beers after work" sounds a lot better than "Let's grab a couple beer after work" .... ahhh, I'm so confused.

Couldnt it be both depending on how it is warranted in any given situation? Perhaps a grouping noun is required. For instance, in a plural beer cases purchase (2 or more),
- "I purchased a 'gaggle' of beer."
- "I went and picked up a 'murder' of beers"

Call them what you want ... I think a plurality of beer is a darn fine thing.

Beer is the content. The container is the measure. You don't pluralize the content, you pluralize the containers.

"I'll have 2 glasses of beer."
"I need 12 bottles of beer."
"Grab a case of beer."

To say "beers" is just being lazy.

My in-laws do this. They will say "I had 6 or 7 beer the other night". I would say "beers" myself, but who knows. They also say "tin" for everything that is in a can or has been canned. That drives me nuts.

Tin is the British word for what we call 'can'. For example, in the UK they'd say a 'tin of beans' instead of a 'can of beans'.

Pizza and beer is fine.

Just as you don't say I had 5 pizza, you don't say I had 5 beer.

Notice the dictionary entry where it says the plural of beer is beers?

Like MQS's example, you should start telling people you ordered 2 pizza for dinner last night (because they were both the same kind). It sounds so stupid in both cases.
