We went through that once before because there was no cap and the team had no money. I see no point in doing it voluntarily.

Obviously I am hoping for a #1/#2 type return for him, though.

This isn’t even remotely true, and easily looked up too. Hanifin is second in ice time per game for the flames, and averages a full minute more per game than Weegar, and almost 4 minutes per game more than Tanev.
Hanifin, this year is a very clear #2 for Huska, and is having an excellent season

keep heearing eat 50% of this contract, that contract. Looking at cap friendly doesnt look like we have enough cap relief to help facilitate trades. I dont think it reflects Dube coming off.

Yeah there's no relief calculated into that from Dube.
Also, the Flames are currently carrying cap (on CapFriendly) for 15 forwards , 2 goalies and 8 defencemen.

This may come as something of a shock, but small market teams are already farm teams for big market clubs. This is why the big market teams get the top UFA talent and the rest of the league overpays for the scraps. So trying not to be something you already are is probably not going to work. Unless by some miracle Calgary returns to its 1970's and 1980's booming form.
I am curious when you think the Flames have tried this before? Pre cap era? Young Guns era? I mean what is being suggested here doesn't align with anything the Flames have done in the past, IMO. The Flames haven't had a top scouting staff in the league in over 30 years.
But to address your real objection: developing talent for other teams. Well here's the thing. In a professional sports league, talent is your currency. You might have a nice city, a nice arena and even a passionate fanbase. But the only thing you can really exchange is talent. Sure the Flames could relocate to a more desirable city, but I'm pretty sure none of us want that? So what's left? Talent.
In order to be rich in the currency of exchange you need more talent than the next guy over. If you can't buy the talent, you need to develop it. But here's the catch: you eventually need to trade that talent to realize any gains. And if you want to compound those gains you're going to need to trade that talent when it is at peak value. Essentially you're trading that beanstalk for enough magic beans to eventually grow a beanstalk farm. And once you get to that point, hopefully you're well fed on your burgeoning bean supply.
While the Flames can't compete when it comes to buying talent on the ice, I think it is a totally different story off the ice. There is no salary cap for your scouting and player development staff. As such, this is where the Flames should be making their biggest investments. Flames should not be bottom of the league in either of these departments.

Wouldn't want to trade a helpful piece to the Oil first off, but I also don't like anything in their system.

It wouldn't surprise me if CapFriendly needs to add a category to its algorithm: non-roster players not counting against the cap for reasons other than injury. I bet they weren't expecting this to be a thing.

To Edmonton: Christopher Tanev (50% retained)
To Calgary: Cody Ceci, Dylan Holloway (or a 2nd?), 2024 1st,
Then you work your magic and turn Ceci into something in the off-season/next TDL.
I'd do some of those sort of shenanigans (...if Holloway can be salvaged, yikes of a season...but, it is Edmonton and he is from Calgary, I can understand his suffering)
If you can turn Tanev into a multi-piece return including a 1st? Beautiful work.

All through the 1990s, the Flames had to trade their top players to other teams, or else watch them walk as free agents. They couldn't afford to sign them.

You don't get the benefit of that talent if you trade it away the minute it's done developing.

At some point you also need to win hockey games. Your plan doesn't include that stage.
Running a perpetual farm team for other clubs, and paying those farm players NHL salaries, is a great way to lose money.

If you’re trading Tanev to the Oilers, you better be getting a king’s ransom back.

2024 unconditional 1st, Broberg. No retention on Tanev, they have to work their own way out of the woods.
Tanev get injured in his 1st game and done for the year. Sign with CGY in the offseason.
It writes itself really.

Yes, in terms of average ice time as of right now Hanifin is #2. But he has been getting considerably more ice time the past 10-15 games than he did the first half of the season. This would be consistent with what we saw with Zadorov, where his ice time increased when he was actively being shopped. But if you want to call him a #2 that's fine.

Whoever gives the best return is who you make the trade with. I'm all for being petty but not at the cost of assets.
