No one’s talking about a 2 year deal. They want to sign him up until he’s in the back half of his 30s.

Hanifin's ability is not the concern. The concern is if he is invested in this team as it transitions into one that loses much more than it wins.

If they're good again in the three years he would be very beneficial.

An 8 year deal would expire when he’s 35.
We’re looking at 7-8 top quality years, he may not have even peaked yet.

It’s possible he may not have but it’s highly probable his best days are not in the future. Aging curves peak well before most people realize it.

We just clobbered Boston. It’s not like we’re San Jose.
How much more rebuilding does everyone think is going to happen? From the 21/22 season I only count 7 players left. 3 of them might be leaving in the next month. Only 2 forwards.
Markstrom
Tanev
Hanifin
Kylington
Anderson
Mangiapane
Backlund
Seems like the rebuild has already happened. People just weren’t paying attention. Go forward it’ll probably just be regular drafting/player development and trades. But I think if Markstrom goes and they bring in wolf and Tanev is essentially replaced by Pachal. I’d say the whole roster has pretty much been turned over in two years. With others waiting in the wings like Coronato.
The Flames aren’t as bad as is usually broadcasted. They are just really inconsistent. I think the Lindholm trade will make a big difference in getting Huberdeau and the powerplay going. That will have a massive impact.

I’m probably in the minority here, but I hope Hanifin doesn’t want to sign here. He’s a good defenseman but being a sellers market right now, I think it’s important not to lock up older players to long contracts. Would I be angry if he signed? No but I really want this team to add more picks and prospects. Anderson, Weegar and Kylington provide three veteran dmen. I worry in 3-4 years Hanifin will decline and will have a big salary. I also wonder if his heart is really wanting to stay in Calgary or that he knows Calgary is offering a big contract now and that he can sign it and be traded to an American team in a year or two.

I still think keeping Hanifin and moving Andersson would be the ideal scenario that likely will never happen.

I hate it when people call Hanifin young, because McDavid was born the same month, and I'm sick and tired of McDavid.

This is the best take; while signing a 27-year 2/3 defenceman is not a bad idea, I am intrigued by what the Flames can get in this market. It could set us up for the long term.

You wouldn't be if he was a Flame.

They’ve won 23 out of 50 games with prime Hanifin. I hope they recognize the likelihood of building a powerhouse team while Hanifin is still useful is low and opt out of it.
I’d much rather have 4 top 40 picks than 3.

What the hell are you talking about? An 8 year deal takes him to 35. Tanev is damn near that age and he’s still a very good dependable defenseman. Hanifin’s game should age better too. If he wants to stay at the rumour Ed deal you sign him!
Any asset we get in return you hope will be as good as Hanifin! Fan bases lose their minds about prospects and picks, but having good players is fun too!
The Flames got a haul for Lindholm, they’re likely getting two more pretty good assets for Tanev.
The team is younger, has future assets now, will have some cap space… I think keeping Hanifin makes so much sense.

To be fair Forwards and D men have different trajectories.
I can't remeber the exact article, but it suggests that forwards offensive output starts the decline after 26, and then takes a steep dive after 30.
With D men, it is understood that their prime starts at 25 and lasts until about 31.

Hanifin's style of play keeps him pretty durable and he's still young. Signing him longterm isn't a bad idea, but Tanev I believe is gone before deadline for sure.

I'm totally on the fence with Hanifin. If he re-signs, I'll be both happy and have some regrets about missing out on the return(s). If he doesn't, I'll be happy and have some regrets that we lost a good 2/3 D-man.

You open windows to compete when you underpay people like Lindholm and Hanifin. Unfortunately it didn’t work out this time, so let’s move on.
I mean if Boston is paying Forbort $3M and it’s so hard to find players like Hanifin, imagine what we could get from a team who needs one. With retention he’d be cheaper than Forbort.
|
So only go with RFA age players and never extend them again? Lose them at 27 every time? LOL
