If he gets traded I’ll be happy with the return I’m sure. But at the same time one of our firsts will be used on a dman that we hope turns into Hanifin. As long as he doesn’t walk for free, it’s good with me!
Plot twist, gets traded as a rental with a handshake agreement to come back in the summer 7.5x7

Not exactly, but not to a max term deal unless it’s Crosby or Bedard or someone like that.
The player almost always wins that deal, not the team.

Which rules out pretty much any top line or top pairing player

Hanifin isn’t a top pairing player.
The time to offer those big term deals is after the ELC. Skip the RFA red herring and lock them up for their prime. Then trade them for a Lindholm haul and let someone else pay the retirement deal.

In my mind New Jersey and Calgary make good trade partners
To New Jersey: Markstrom and Hanifan
To Calgary: Nemec, 2024 First round pick ( Lottery protection), goes to a 2025 First round pick if new jersey wins lottery 2024
That is a trade that benefits both teams, New Jersey comes a better team, Calgary gets younger, paves the way for Wolf

He’s a #2/#3 and a top pairing guy on a lot of teams but I also think you’ll win a cup trading every guy at 27. Ideal is to have guys hut free agency at 32/33

Jersey won’t part ways with Nemec. A retained Markstrom and signed Hanifin may return, Holtz + Casey + 2024 1st

No way the Devils trade Nemec. He has a legit shot at being a #1D

I’d say 30-31, but okay. Hanifin is a middle pairing D on a solid team. So why would you offer an 8-year deal beginning in their age 28 season?

I don’t think he is middle pairing and think he’ll play well into his 30s

I don’t. And I don’t think Hanifin does either. He won’t accept 2x$8M which I’d be fine with since he’d still have value at the end of it. They want to be paid for their decline years which I don’t want any part of.
