Why would Nintendo do that though?

Why make a SKU that's $100 less that just causes more confusion for your own product.

People that want it will pay the $100 more and just get the one that has a screen.

Also don't really get why anybody wouldn't just pay $100 more for the flexibility of something that's portable and dockable.

I didn't think the Switch Lite was a great idea either but that one did fill a niche (lots of people got it as a second portable unit for families that had multiple kids etc).

The consumer cost for a replacement switch LCD is only $40 from iFixIt. Nintendo's wholesale cost is probably less than half that at $20 including digitizer. There isn't much cost to integrating the screen either as it just connects via ribbon cable.

Yeah I was thinking mark-up but to your point maybe I'm being generous on the $100...maybe it's only even $50.

No reason to create a different sku for that.

Similar to how Xbox should not have had two SKUs IMO for Series S vs Series X.

Sony is the only one that I think makes a little sense but even then I wonder if they should have just stuck to a single sku with a disk drive for launch and maybe introduce the different variant after.

This is Nintendo we are talking about
confusion? different Sku's? lol

It's what they do. I'm never gonna use it portable, I will just buy a used one with a broken screen again like I did with the current model.

Feels like it’s a bit too early for the Nintendo next gen. Switch has been incredible, maybe their best console yet, and feels like they still have time and room to run with it.

But if they are going to make a new system just, for the love of god, make controllers that don’t suck. That don’t break with marginal use. That can withstand the wear and tear kids will put on them. If you’re going to charge $100 for controllers? They better ####in work.

It's been 7 years! I would be up for a bigger screen a bit more processing power certainly.

They'll keep selling it for another 3-4 years after a new system I am sure.

Yeah the Switch desperately needs an upgrade at this point. It's a minor miracle there's any cross-platform games still coming to the Switch with how underpowered it is.

Lol it's definitely not too early for Nintendo Next-Gen. Switch is going in to it's eighth year, this will be one of the longest lifespans for any console on the market without a successor, ever. And it definitely needs an upgrade.

Not to mention the Switch didn't even really look better than the Wii U in the first place

Xbox console sales are down year over year and physical copies are disappearing.

Not surprised at this, I've recently become a Gamepass convert and while i have a Series S, I don't really turn it on as I game on the PC or cloud on Steamdeck & Tesla screen.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/paultas...h=14d8821f25f0

Add to that, lots of news reports that physical Xbox games are getting removed from shelves due to poor sales

I personally wonder how long it takes for Microsoft to become multiplatform with Gamepass.

Have to think that opening up your subcription service to the platform with the much bigger market share will be something they try to pursue one day.

If they stay in the console market, which I believe they will until streaming is as good as gaming on a console, I could see them offering a multi-platform version of gamepass where first party releases aren't included on other consoles for timed exclusivity.

The second Xbox SKU makes sense for selling to lower income areas and countries as an entry level system. I heard the Series S is popular in Eastern Europe as that's one of the rare places where it vastly outsells X and PS5.

But for the Switch - the whole identity is portable gaming. If it becomes another box I think Nintendo loses its identity. They've always struggled with that and their clear wins have always been when they have a clear identity (DS, original Wii, etc.). Remember the 3DS - just now in 2D...but in XL size...and it doesn't fold?

As a current Gamepass subscriber, the biggest shortcoming is wait times. There is nothing more frustrating than launching a game to be told that the servers are busy and the wait is 5-9 minutes. Then you just have to leave your TV or screen on that rocketship waiting screen because you are afraid you'll lose your spot in line.

PS

I am on Gamepass because I figured out how to get it free every month by getting microsoft reward points - https://www.reddit.com/r/MicrosoftRewards/

This isn't anything to do with Gamepass specifically, but Cloud Gaming. Any game you download and install from Gamepass won't have this issue, only those streamed via Cloud Gaming.

Yes sorry I didn't clarify. As I can only install Gamepass Games on my Xbox or Gaming Laptop I see the wait times when playing on Macbook, Steamdeck, and in the car.

Is an Xbox Series S the cheapest entry point for access to Gamepass/Xbox exclusives?

EDIT: or, alternatively, would streaming via the cloud on a compatible device work well enough?

Big news starting to come out that Microsoft is planning to bring first party titles multiplatform, specifically Starfield to PS5, Hi-Fi Rush to PS5 and Switch, upcoming Indiana Jones to PS5. Really signaling the beginning of the end for Microsoft as a hardware maker.

Personally I would go with the Series S, for minimal cost you will get far better performance. Even grab a used one...heck I have seen used Series X pretty cheap these days.
