ok I didn't mean to offend the hunters on this forum, however MY personal belief is a child should NEVER have a weapon, Kids are kids, and I've heard too many sad stories to support it. I respect that you have your opinions and that they are different. but I dont believe I am ignorant and I just have my beliefs

Kids are kids yes...but kids do stupid things when their parents aren't watching them.

So if no parents are around, I hope this .50 caliber pistol is locked up, and a trigger guard is put in place.

Nothing wrong with shooting a gun, or hunting with your parents. I'm sure many of us here can attest to the awesome times we had hunting with our parents.

Accidents happen everywhere else too...especially with kids. Are we going to prohibit them from doing 'everything'...or are we going to trust the parents to take care of their children and teach them proper gun safety?

a 50 calibre round will bring down pretty much anything, you have to respect a hunter who dosen't shoot something from 500 yards away with a scoped high powered rifle. This kid chased the thing down for three hours and shot it at point blank range.

Thats almost as manly as hunting a polar bear with a cross bow.

Feral pigs have various impacts on the environment, including:

* Eating or destroying native plants and animals.
* Wallowing in, fouling and disturbing soils in dams, waterholes and other moist or swampy areas.
* Digging for food. This can have major impacts on vegetation and forest litter, particularly along drainage lines and around swamps and lagoons, or after rain when the ground is softer. These actions destabilise stream banks and accelerate erosion.

Feral pigs also prey on new born lambs, eat and destroy grain crops and pastures, and damage fences. Feral pigs carry endemic diseases such as leptospirosis, brucellosis and meliodosis. They are also a potential host of foot and mouth disease, should it ever be introduced into Australia.

Okay, okay...

An eleven year old boy in Alabama killed a wild boar hog weighing 1151 pounds on a hunting trip with his father. The pig is reportedly larger than the famous Hogzilla of the state and is the largest reported boar ever.

The family announced that they plan to mount the head and make sausage from the meat.

In a probably unrelated story, Rosie O'Donnell has been reported missing in the state of Alabama one day after resigning from the view. The activist, comedian, lesbian, and talk show hostess quit because of conflicts with just about member of the cast and crew on the show.

I have no problem with an 11 year old under responsible supervision using a gun to hunt feral pigs. Perhaps not a handgun but overall I have no priblme with responsible use. Which is of course the kid having the proper training, the gun is locked up at all times while not hunting etc etc etc

I grew up in a small Alberta community...weekend afternoons in the summer were spent gopher shooting. Hunting was the norm though not something I particularily enjoyed. I have trouble killing animals but no trouble at all eating the animals others kill!

Nearly every kid I knew had atleast a pellet gun or .22. Obviously not powerful guns or anything but the principles of handling those guns were the same as any other. Only used for the proper purpose under supervision, used properly and when not in use stored in such a manner that only a parent had access. If any of these rules were broken the punishment was harsh.

There will always be idiots who are irresponsible but that in itself does not make guns a bad thing. An 11 year old is more than capable of understanding the proper way to handle a gun and given what this kid took down I'd say he knew exactly how to use the gun.

all the same 5 years is a major difference, 11 years old, you are still in elementary

What about racing, jumping gorges, demolition derbies, or running down small animals, and/or unsusecting old people?

Designed purpose.
Cars were designed to transport. Racing and animal squashing is a by-product. Guns are used for shooting a piece of paper or a clay disc. But still their original designed purpose was to kill.

But there is a rather large gap between an objects intended use and it's "Sole" use.

My point is that a guns sole use isn't killing. Sure that is the main and intended use, but it most certainly isn't it's "sole" use.
