By the time Marner needs to renew you have $11M coming off the books for Tavares, the cap will be about $8M higher, and Marner probably only gets a slight raise to around $11.5M.

I think they keep him.

Something has to give with the aging defence and at some point a deal will have to be made to get that in order.
Nylander is older than Matthews. They should be offering a Matthews length deal. No problem paying big bucks for a player while they’re worth it, but I love to see people twist themselves into pretzels defending long term deals. “The cap is going up! We’ll be competitive for the first part! That’s the plan all along!”

I’m sure the Leafs would love to sign Nylander to a 5 year deal but why would Nylander. Matthews contract structure is pretty favourable to himself and Nylander won’t be able to cash in on another contract like Matthews. He basically told the Leafs he won’t take a discount on term or cap hit.

Offer a 3 year deal for more money than Matthews and make him say no. If he does, fine. They will make a deadline trade to add someone and have a really good look at a playoff run before Nylander leaves. Why tie your balance sheet up for years unnecessarily?

But I bet Treliving still has nightmares about Gaudreau.

They can offer, but Nylander isn't signing it.

Teams give long term deals to older players as its the only way they will sign. That's the market.

Everyone knows Nylander's deal will suck at the end. That's the cost of doing business.

If only he'd sign a 5 year deal at $4MM AAV, life would be good.

Matthews wanted a shorter deal as he wants to sign an 8 year deal when its done. He was doing anyone any favours. Toronto would have preferred an 8 year deal. By signing him to 5, they have essentially agreed to a 13 year deal, unless he gets injured or regresses, and its unlikely they will want him to walk. With a 8 year deal initially, they may well have let him walk.

Matthews got a 4 year deal. They are getting all his best years and can let someone else pay the “look what he did” sucker’s deal.

Sooner or later GMs will figure out why players are so desperate for 8-year deals at the end of RFA or slightly later (they know they’re at their peak and the decline is about to start) and stop giving them out.

Random internet site rumour:

https://www.nhltraderumor.com/devils...ade-rumor-nhl/

Quote:
The proposed trade would see the Calgary Flames sending goalie Jacob Markstrom, defenseman Noah Hanifin, and prospect Matthew Coronato to the New Jersey Devils.

In return, the Devils would part ways with goalie Vitek Vanecek, forward Nolan Foote, defenseman Simon Nemec, and their 2024 first-round pick. This trade, if it goes through, would be one of the most significant deals of the season, given the caliber of the players involved.
I mean...that'd be a trade focused on quality. Simon Nemec is a class of prospect/young NHL'er that really doesn't get traded very often.

Edit: It would seem this is a pile of Fata from a few pages back.

As player the goal should really be to hit UFA at 28 years old IMO.

Assume the average player hits the NHL at 20 years old (draft+2) and has a 3 year ELC that takes you to 23 years old. I'd then want to sign a 5 year extension that takes me to 28, and I can be UFA at 28 years old. Sign my 8 year deal at 28 and I am getting paid until I am 36/37 years old.

Honestly stop linking to this site.

The guy is just taking fan made proposals from Cap Friendly and playing them off as rumors.

Yes, agreed.

As a team, the goal should be to get them into the NHL to take advantage of the ELC years, offer a max term deal, and then they’re on their own at 30-31.

The GMs job is to win and not care about the balance sheet in four years when they are managing a contending team. If they don’t sign Nylander then they have to be okay with losing him and trying to replace him. They won’t find as good of a player.

The GMs know why players want an 8 year contract, it isn’t an unknown fact that for the most part the players will underperform these contracts but the NHL is a zero sum game and all it takes is for one other GM to pony up and you lose your star UFA.

About that D and goaltending though

They have 11 regulation wins in 36 games...seems like another playoff failure is likely

GMs know it likely won't be their problem in 6 years

Might be a totally made up rumor, but it is a more interesting one than the NYR one for example.

This one is questionable. The value is probably close.

I for one am not long on Coronado in flames red. But the value is at least consistent with where he was drafted- Mid 1st round pick. Some lists have him going higher in redraft so maybe slightly more.

Hanfin probably worth a 1st + on his own

Markstrom is much harder to peg. IMO he's still negative value because of contract, but there has been plenty of smoke lately and multiple interested parties drives value. Maybe a 3rd?

Nemec is worth 1st+. He's one year out of being selected 2nd overall, though NJ could see Hanifin as more advanced and taking his spot so to speak.

Cal Foote is not worth a lot, maybe a 3rd or 2nd.

The 2024 1st from NJ will be back half at minimum, if not bottom 6 or so.

Seems pretty balanced. I don't know if management would do it, but I think it's an interesting proposal.

In what sense is the NHL a zero sum game? If one team wants to spend their cap space on a declining player then that means you aren’t?

I don’t think that’s what you meant, but I suppose it’s true.

I don't get why writers are constantly apologizing for bringing up family members. Meddling parents are 100% a thing in sports. As are spouses. If that's what going on, then report on it, it's relevant. It's not like he's disclosing personal details about the people. We all know that Nylander's father was a fairly big figure in hockey and certainly played some kind of role in his children's own hockey careers.
