We were not in a place that we needed to sign a top 10 free agent, that getting Markstrom was the difference between competing and not competing.
GMs need to not only consider if they want a player but if it makes sense with where your team is and it clearly did not. Now we are potentially stuck with a guy who we would be better off trading and we got one play-off series win for it and multiple non-play-off seasons? Not a great return.

How? We weren't a top team, weren't ready to compete for anything, hadn't shown any ability to overcome our lack of talent to succeed in the play-offs.
We added him and went onto not even come close to competing in any season with him.

Right now, no. Back when Markstrom was signed they were.
Not very many people were upset at the time that they gave him a NMC. He was the top goalie free agent that summer.

If you're gonna tank, ride him to the bottom and then leave him withering to free agency. Flames still have a possibility for a top 3 pick this year.

How did that work out? Did they take a big step by adding Markstrom?

Obviously you're trolling, but they looked ready to take a step. Then they didn't. Happens all the time.

We added him and went on to have the second best record in the regular season while he finished second in Vezina voting and took us to the second round.
We can play pretend that the Flames weren’t close, but they had a monumental collapse in the second round. That doesn’t erase everything. Revisionist history is lame.

Trolling by pointing out that the Flames were not a team ready to compete by adding a goalie alone. By pointing out that had we not given Markstrom a deal with a NMC that we would have had the same amount of play-off success that we had with him.
That is not trolling in anyway.

It isn't revisionist they had regular season success, is that the point of signing big name free agents? Going to the 2nd round isn't a big accomplishment, it shouldn't be looked at as success.

Goaltending is better than ever. But so are shooters.
The issue with goaltending these days seems to be consistency. Almost every goalie in the NHL today who has played 200+ games has had spells when the’ve been elite. But only a handful seem able to sustain that level season after season.

I think the overall level of goaltending is certainly better, there were some awful goaltenders in the past that don't seem to exist now but there also seems to be less great goalies, maybe that is because the quality of the skaters ability to shoot has taken away the ability to as dominant as goalies were in the past so even the best goalies will be unable to stop as much as they did.

They basically had to take the step. The window was tiny because they refused to rebuild properly 10 years ago, but we had to give term to get somebody, even if it was the wrong choice. So here we are with our 1 year window over, stuck with the long term contract that only does us harm now.

Some might argue that we have almost nothing BUT third liners.

Can’t believe Samsonov is on waivers. He’ll turn it around either this year or next, IMO.

Two NHL teams have now decided they're okay with losing him for nothing.
I don't know much about him as I haven't watched a lot of Caps and Leafs games, but I would think that's pretty telling.

Why was Markstrom given a NMC?
1) He demanded one from the Canucks and that's where negotiations fell apart - he wanted to make sure that he didn't end up going to Seattle in the expansion trade. He would not have signed in Calgary - OR ANYWHERE ELSE - without one.
2) It is common for UFAs to demand NMC. Markstrom was clear that he preferred to sign in Calgary if he wasn't going to get a NMC in Vancouver. However, there is zero reasons to assume he would have signed with any other team without having a NMC. I would say not giving him one might have ended up pushing him into Edmonton, or at least somewhere else.
I have zero issues with Markstrom's contract, including his NMC. I am far from a Treliving apologist, but that was a fair contract IMO. In fact, I would say this - Treliving absolutely sucked as a GM in 3 areas:
1) UFA deals helped kill this team
2) Continually trading picks to fill depth
3) Terrible coaching hires
4) Inability to find capable and consistent goaltending
Markstrom was finally the cure for #4. I think he has been good through most of his contract, with last year being the 'blip' year so far. Up until last year, and through this year so far, Markstrom has given the Flames #1 starter consistency. I hope he does get traded as I believe the Flames need a rebuild, and by the time they become competitive again, Markstrom may not even be playing in the NHL. I think the assets gained - especially with retention - are valuable to a rebuild. However, Markstrom's contract is fair, including the NMC.
