The Blue Jays are now rumored to be interested in trading for Yelich.
It was Heyman who reported it though so he probably thinks it's not what's best for Yelich or baseball because it's not the Dodgers who Jackie Robinson played for.

Yelich best years are probably behind him, but he's still pretty good and a much needed LHB with some pop.

The Jays would be doing Milwuakee a favour getting them out of that contract, my goodness. He's entering year 3, of a 7 year 188 million deal with a full NTC and he just turned 32.
He's still a good player, but he's not a great player anymore. This contract has significantly diminishing value. I like him and he would make the 2024 Jays better, but that's about the only positive.

I'm assuming they'd probably be eating a certain portion of that contract.
Looks like there are 5 years and $110M of real money left on that contract. ($4M per year was deferred so no idea how that would work).
But if they ate $30M of that...and it became 5 years and $80M of real money left...I could see that being pretty appealing.

Yeah that contract on Yelich gives him straight up negative value. Even if they paid some of it the Jays could probably still land a 4 WAR left fielder for basically a song.
Maybe you have the makings of some sort of massive blockbuster trade there.

Paul DeJong for 50% retained Yelich. Make it happen.

The Ohtani hate is funny to me.
It's not even a scored ex lover...it's like you were obessessing and stalking over somebody that you talked to once at a bar, and then they got married to somebody else and now you hate them for it and for getting a restraining order against you.

The hate is just my personal thing.
But objectively, he's not a Blue Jay and can no longer be one, and this is a Blue Jays thread.

My bad, I thought this was the only general MLB thread.

That's the sort of win now move I sort of like given the current situation. The Jay's have a couple more years of control on Vladdy/Bo, and starting pitching locked up for next year.
Yelich is a big upgrade left handed bat compared to KK in the now, and the contract makes him likely cheap to aquire. You pay for it in years 5/6/7 when you're probably in a re-rool anyway. That's one of the big holes this year, and if you can fill it without using a bunch of prospect capital that helps.

I'd have to think the CBA will be changed based on the Ohtani contract. That level of deferral was definitely not contemplated in the spirit of the rules, even if it follows the letter of the rules.

If MLB wanted to make some sort of prohibition against deferred salary you'd think that they'd have done it already in the wake of the ridiculousness of Bobby Bonilla Day.
They aren't going to do anything... not for the least reason that I'm sure they care significantly less about applying a CBT total dollar rate in lieu of a NPV discount rate vs. the possibility of labour unrest.

There was a rumor that Ohtani wanted ownership stake as part of the deal...wonder if part of what happens in the end is that the $680M actually just converts to ownership stakes.

I think Bobby Bonilla was a much different situation. He only deferred about $6M of his salary and that was when he was bought out by the Mets in the last year of his deal. His original contract was like $30M, so he ended up deferring 20% of his contract and only when we got released.
Ohtani has deferred 97% of his entire contract upfront. There really is no comparable here.

I’ve yet to hear anyone explain the problem with how it’s treated. It’s a 47 million dollar per year contract and that’s how it’s treated by the CBA. I don’t see it as being any concern for cap circumvention. It may be more controversial if it get evade California taxes. It’s just wrong to call it a 700 million contract when it isn’t really.
