The Flames were dealt a crummy hand with Gaudreau and Tkachuk leaving. They went all-in on the next hand, and didn't even hit a pair. It's probably the rock bottom they needed to realize they have a problem with how they've been playing the game.
With the contracts they have on the books, there's really no way to avoid a rebuild now, which is likely what they needed from the moment the wheels went up on Tkachuk's plane out of YYC.
Hopefully they have some good luck in the draft...

Give Tanev a lots time to heal and get ready. He needs to be healthy to bring a good return. I hope we trade him to a contender that he has his chance to win the cup.
And I hope Conroy also study a market for Coleman, Kadri and Weegar. Sure they have a term but they are still good players who has a role for a contending team. May be we can get a good return for them.

How about we worry about trading Lindholm and Hanifin first? If those two are the only two people we trade you do it.
Have zero interest trading the best players on our team right now. Eventually Kadri will likely ask for a trade out but as of right now he is the best center we've got.
As for Tanev I am having a hard time seeing him valued over a 2nd round pick if he continues to get injured. He's a warrior, I just fear a team is going to throw some dumb condition on the pick based on GP.

If anyone wants Kadri then you make it happen. Zero point in holding onto him.

Until his term is lowered, I doubt anyone asks. Maybe the Avs call but any trade involving Kadri better not involve retention.

Why not?
We’ve carried dead cap like every season possible under Treliving for buyouts.
If you can extract some value, I’d easily eat $1.5M. Kadri at $5.5M, with how he’s playing? I think you pull a 1st.

And we didn't have cap to re-sign Tkachuk with Treliving as GM. I am doing everything within my power to not retain on Kadri's contract. Take a bad contract with less term. Or, take on a bad contract than you can buy out while taking a 1st as you suggested.

That was because Treliving decided to prioritize bad UFA signings like Neal and Brouwer over Tkachuk. If the option is retain 1.5 million or keep Kadri's full contract then you retain or else that contract might stop you from signing someone if he is still hitting the cap at 7 million. If you can take a bad contract that is shorter that would be ideal.

No, we didn't have cap because we had Milan Lucic and Michael Frolik on the books - $10M in salary committed to depth players who were no good by that time.
The lesson is not to sign inflated free agent contracts.

Let's name a time when the Flames have retained in the past decade... Can't find one. I agree that's what should happen but like I said I'd rather take on a bad contract with the same cap hit with less term, then free up 7m of cap for however many years we saved.

And the GM before Conroy has already signed those contracts and we have to work through them. Kadri isn't going to raise his value elsewhere, he is going to here with the ice time he is getting. With how this team is rolling, could definitely see Kadri traded as soon as the upcoming offseason, but I think someone would take him at the 2025 TDL. If we have't retained by then it's not a bad time to do it then with less term. I'm just not a fan of retaining on a player that is over 5+ seasons on a deal. I guess the cap increase nullifies any retention.
Regardless, my reply to the poster was to keep Weegar and Coleman. People want a scorched rebuild but we still need solid vets to hang around.

I think Weegar was a good pick up. But Huberdeau is going to be a boat anchor on the organization for a long time. I get the trading the UFAs narrative. But something has to be done about his contract.

Rittich is the only one. Maybe there will be a bit of change this go around hopefully we will. Nah, Kadri is a contract where you got to hit it while you can. The ability to move his contract will only decrease with time.
On another note
https://theathletic.com/5119079/2023...ffoli-playoffs
Toffoli confirms he wanted to stay and he liked Calgary and Conroy said sayonara. That gives me hope that Conroy won't do anything dumb with UFAs

Why does something have to be done?
The team isn't going to be in position to compete for a number of years.
I don't think cap space is going to be an issue for the next 5/6 years.

I can't imagine that Conroy would be so public about keeping those retention spots open, if he didn't have at least some idea that he will be allowed to use them.

There is nothing to do with that contract. There isn't a reasonable amount of retention where someone would take him today. I think the best hope is that they play him a tonne of minutes and starts clicking at some point and then they can flip him for some shorter but equally terrible contracts. Oilers wouldn't even trade Nurse for him right now.

All free agent contracts are inflated. If you don’t want to overpay for them, then you need the discipline to stay out the UFA market altogether. And if you choose to stay out of the UFA market altogether, you better have an excellent pipeline of prospects every year.

If the Flames were in a spot where players wanted to sign here then the UFA market might be okay but they have to overpay for players like Neal and Brouwer. They won’t ever be on the list for high end UFAs and should only sign depth guys.
Players they drafted are different and can be handled on a case by case basis

If Kadri was going to the Avs I think Girard would have been part of the package the other way.
Hopefully he gets things sorted though via the player assistance fund, but it would have been the perfect "bad" contract coming back the other way that also actually filled a need on the Flames.
