You don't think Tesla learned a lot during the development of the Cybertruck that will help them make their future EVs?

Sure they did. But they could have done that developing a not stupid looking version with self imposed constraints.


And is having the biggest windshield in automotive history, or figuring out how to clear 2/3rds of it with the stupidest wiper ever envisioned, but they didn't have a choice.


This is a vehicle of compromises to maintain the shape of a child's napkin sketch.

I don't like anything about it either, but if they sell a bunch then good for them.

End of the day its all a march towards a $25k or less cost EV.

I am all about learning from your past mistakes and improving and moving forward, but the Cybertruck is what shouldn’t have happened if any previous mistakes were heeded.

The only way the Cybertruck is helping achieve the $25k EV goal is if the buyers of a $100k Cybertruck are subsidizing Model 3s.

There are a few things they developed for the Cybertruck, like 48V architecture and ethernet communications. Some of this was kind of required for things like steer by wire 4 wheel steering, but it could be pretty easily argued Tesla was going this direction anyway. They didn't need the Cybertruck for it. They are also not the only company doing this, so i don't see anything really special here.



A big kind of unacknowledged failure is the 4680 cell, which was supposed to be the next big thing for them. It's in some of the Model Y and the Cybertruck were suppose dot get a new generation, but clearly that hasn't been very successful yet. They've struggled with volume and energy density from their initial plans, which is one of the reasons the Cybertruck range is so piddly. The cells haven't lived up to the promise.

Actually one of the things that was interesting was the 240v outlet, that might allow daisy-chaining at charging stations - potentially if they can set things up right.

What would be the point of that? You'd just have more vehicles sharing the same amount of power so they would all take longer to charge. Many other manufacturers already have bidirectional ports though, so this isn't a unique development.

It wouldn’t reduce power, it would reduce the extra charging “spots” and keep the lines at charging stations moving a little faster. The infrastructure for the stations would need to be beefed up though.

The 240v is also way to charge your other car at home or use the Cybertruck to power your home or campsite, etc. I would love that feature in my car.

That's not how it works. The limiting factor is almost always what the charger can provide, not what the vehicle can take in. The newest Superchargers provide 350kW which I believe the Cybertruck can charge at. So if you daisychain, each truck only gets 175kW so they both take twice as long to charge. Are there some situations where it might provide a slight benefit? Sure, but then you get into the challenges of billing...

It's not unique to Tesla though. I think all the other EV trucks have a 240V outlet.

Yeah, pretty sure the Lightening can do that and it's, you know, a complete and well thought out vehicle that is actually available for sale and not subject to the whims of a madman.

I don't think the Rivian does, I think I remember that being one of the things JerryRigEverything mentioned in his CyberTruck video that he's jealous of.

Cybertruck and F-150 are both unobtainum for me anyway because of cost and also size. Both my home and work parking are hard to navigate parkades with tight corners, pillars, and gates and I think I need a small truck.

I was thinking literally the same thing this morning. There’s a guy out by Strathmore selling some and I want one really bad. If you could get an electric one with a decent range it would be a no-brainer.
