Being arguably the best defenseman on the team is great for the team but considering the other options doesn't really increase his value to teams with much better options than the Flames have.

A really good example would be Moritz Seider in Detroit. That is the type of player I would offer a max term, big money deal to, though I admit most people would probably rate him above Hanifin.
At 22, you are getting the entire prime and not paying a needless age penalty. We shouldn't settle for perpetually having looming bad contracts on the books because "the cap is going up". Some teams don't have any bad contracts and the cap is going up for them too.

Hanifin is not a #1 dman, that’s not saying he’s bad but comparing him to the true #1’s he’d be far down the list. He’s for sure a first pairing d on most teams however which makes him valuable.
We would be far better drafting a potential #1 Dman in the top 10.

Your article cotes guys who made a significantly larger % of the cap and were expected to play 25+ minutes a night as a stud #1. That's is not what is expected of a 7.5mil dman right now, and with the essentially known increases in the cap coming up it will be an even lower cap %.
Asking what they could get back in trade? I didn't say it would be tradable for a huge asset return, but tradable means it's movable, which in your situation I think it would be.

A potential #1D like Hanifin was when he was taken 5th overall?
You just make it sound so easy. Get a top 10 pick and turn it into Makar/Heiskanen/Hughes. Unfortunately some of those picks turn out into Gudbranson(3rd), Juolevi(5th), or Reinhart(4th).

It's not a fact that Enoch is lying.
It's not a fact at all.
At best it's an opinion, but one in poor taste.
Just disagree with the guy, you're good at it.
But enough with the lie BS, that's off side. The rest (patting yourself on the back and calling yourself factual) is up to you.

I guess I don't think overpaying a 2/3 dman like Hanifin by 1mln over 8 years is what sinks a team. What is his floor as a 34/35 year old? I've got to think he is still a #4 dman at that point, and looking at cap growth that won't be great but it will be far from terrible.
This is not the player/position where the Flames will shoot themselves in the foot by overpaying a bit. Its the Neal and Brouwers of the world that get paid 4-5mil and are replacement level.

“Offside” is a really polite way to describe someone acting like a petulant child.

It's the 8 years that's the bigger problem. It's better than giving Lindholm 8, but still a little much for a 2nd pairing guy.
If we ARE getting him for 8, he's old enough it should shave a few bucks off the top.

We are on a Flames board; of course everyone loves Iginla. I am talking about aging curves which should be the baseline for assumptions. I fully acknowledge that there are players who perform at a high level later into their careers, but the fact that this possibility exists is not grounds to make decisions expecting it.
There are only 22 D in the league making more than $7.5M, so if that's not #1 salary, what is? Chip in an extra $350k for Hughes or $1.5M for Makar? 11 teams don't even have a single D making that much.

Yeah, I thought about that after I posted it. I don't know why I assumed it was a reference to Iginla.

Because you are not only calling other posters liars but like Yoho did you just gum up every damn thread with your trolling bs. You are stating an opinion about Hanifin, it isn't fact. You being a gigantic troll that F's up every thread, that is a fact.

I think Hanifin could fit in as a two on pretty any team in the league. Sure there are some that have established pairs that you likely wouldn’t split up (Makar-Toews Hughes-Hronek) but he’s certainly in the conversation with those guys.
Hanifin with Hieskanen, McAvoy, Sieder, Dahlin, could be on par or a half step behind. The problem with the Flames is they don’t have that elite 1D to complement Hanifin and vise versa.

I barely post in most threads, not sure why you keep spreading this lie.
When people lie why should we not call it out?

Not sure why telling the truth is offside but fair enough if that is your rules.
