Celebrated Square Root Day

My favourite part of this thread was the OP stating it was announced on TSN4. Don't want to get which TSN it was announced on mixed up.

I believe it was also simulcast on ESPN "The Ocho"

I saw him play his entire career and he was a great shut down center but I don't consider shot blocking or obstructing skill players as HOF worthy play. I know very well how valuable Stephane Yelle was to the Flames and Avalanche but it's simply not the type of player that belongs in the HOF. You can make a case guys like Brindamour and Peca were more elite versions of defensive centers than Carbonneau and nobody is clamoring for Peca to be in the HOF.

Watch that 1993 Finals series again. I just watched a replay of Game 5. Carbonneau totally shuts down Gretzky on the brightest stage in hockey by positioning and checking. It's magnificent, skillful work.
I absolutely think those types of players belong in the Hall of Fame.

Iginla was not a holdout, he was an RFA without a deal in place. Nieuwendyk was under contract and refused to play.

Guy should be in the water-skiing hall of fame. He got away with a ton of hooking.

So amazing.
Did Vernon ever say why he didn't want to wear 30 in his second go-around with the Flames?

Yeah, I don't what the deal was with that. At the time I just chalked it up to a somewhat-weird organization that didn't want anyone wearing #30, including Vernon himself.

Ohhh right! lol.
You know... I was thinking about this some more this afternoon, and he switched to 29 as soon as he landed in Detroit, and unless I'm mistaken, kept it through San Jose and Florida. I wonder if he always wanted 29 but couldn't get it here because Otto already had it?

Vernon wore #30 with the Wranglers and was with the Flames before Otto. Osgood already had #30 in Detroit when Vernon arrived, so that's likely why he changed.
By the time he came back, he probably just felt more attached to #29.

Oh nice. I thought Otto was already here in '86 though. Wasn't he shadowing Messier in that series?

Congrats to Vernon!
Hot take, the Flames win the 1995 cup if they never trade Vernon.

He was. Otto's first year with the Flames was 1984-85.
Vernon played his first game in 1982-83. He didn't crack the roster full time until 1985-86, but he had played 3 games before that.
