I bet that puppy would rather have its ears cut off, than be born as a calf to be made into veal

I would be 100% in favor changing the law so that animals are not considered an individuals property...with exceptions for livestock

Dobermans and Boxers often get their ears "cropped". They basically cut off half the ear lengthwise, to make the ear pointy. Then, they wrap the ears in cones and stick them to the top of the dog's head for a period of time. When it's all done, you have those pointy ears that stand up. As far as I know, this is purely esthetic.

Tail docking actually has a purpose. Rottweilers and Dobermans and Boxers and Mastiffs often have this done because their tail is pretty powerful. Not only is it a menace inside a house, they often break their tails when wagging it near corners.

Really, what's one got to do with the other? Next time anyone complains to me about anything, I'm just going to say, 'well be thankful you're not going to be turned into veal.' If you want to compare the level of trauma experienced, I'd say this puppy went through much more trauma than a calf; if you pretend that they had human minds and had a concept of death and what was happening to them, and if you pretend that a dog can actually conceive of what it's like to be a calf, then yes, you could pretend that this dog should thank his lucky stars. But that's just delusional anthropomorphism.

Why would the dog need to conceive of what it is like to be a calf to compare the suffering?

But this is why most farmers OPPOSE strengthening animal laws. Because there is no logic bound between a dog owner being able to slice off the head of his dog and a farmer being able to slaughter a cow.

Taking a dog, stuffing them in a small crate, not allowing them to move, while their excrament piles up inside and feeding them crap so they become sick has to remain legal. Otherwise veal becomes illegal.

I don't see the difference. But I'm a vegetarian, so what do I know?

Well, that would be sure to cause all sorts of problems. How can you show a dog is yours if your not technically able to own a dog?

Better just to legislate some animal rights, rather than legislate their independence.

AFAIK, not much. Though judging from the pic, that dog is at least 6 months old. Docking takes place while the pups are still weening. Cropping takes place a little later, but I didn't think that much later. Of course, it generally takes place in the surgical room of a veterinarian, under anasthetic, not in the living room while the owner is frickin drunk.
What an effing bastid. I'd like to cut off his ears.

BRUTAL. unacceptable. then to leave the pup alone to be in pain and be able to scratch at his ears and do more harm to himself han has already been done. good god. awful.

I live where this happened, the poor lady from the Humane Society was on the radio Monday morning and she was crying as she told this story. They think the guy used a serrated edge knife and basically sawed the dogs ears off. What a disgusting piece of crap. He denied he did it, said he only had the dog a few weeks and got it like that. But the story comes out this morning from people who know him saying that he has had the dog for months. Also, the humane society checking their records discovered they had been called to this guys apt. last winter because people complained he had left the dog out on the balcony in sub-zero temperatures. Deserves the same damn treatment, POS that he is.

Obviously, jail time is required . . . . and hopefully a lifetime ban from owning another animal.

Sadistic.

I get the same sort of bubbly rage when I read these types of stories.

The question of whether pets should be considered property rather than living beings is actually a big and often vitriolic debate among those who love animals, within rescue societies, etc . . . . .

One of the most caring and well known of Golden Retriever rescue people in the USA, a lady (now deceased) from San Francisco whom I had the pleasure to visit one time, along with the 10 rescue Golden's in her house, was adamantly opposed to making dogs anything more than property. She felt enforcement or enhancement of anti-cruelty laws plus the fact she had absolute domain over her animals enabled her to better protect them.

A well known proponent of giving animals rights is here:

http://www.animal-law.org/book3.html

Both positions love animals . . . . but both have different points of view on how to protect them.
