I think the bigger problem is people don't actually know what Daylight Saving Time is and when it's in effect. A lot of people I know do not understand that we go on Daylight Saving Time in the summer, and "fall back" to standard time in the winter; they think it's the opposite, that we're on Daylight Saving Time right now. At work I'm constantly correcting people when they write emails like "I'm available for a call at xx:xx am MST" in the summer; "You mean MDT?"


Had the wording been a more concise "Do you want Alberta to adopt Central Standard Time year-round (as in Saskatchewan)?" I think it would have been a much more resounding "no".

I'm glad that I'm not the only one that notices and is bothered by this. Now I usually just say "13:00 Mountain" or abbreviate to MT, PT, CT, ET, etc. because daylight/standard is irrelevant when booking meetings across time zones. My extra keypress, although correct, won't make any difference.

If you are having trouble with your kids due to the clock change, it's most likely your fault as a parent for making their schedule too strict such that they can't adapt to a small change in timing.

My daughter adapted to time change by sleeping in to 7:40 on Sunday (would have been 8:40) and then proceeded to wake up right on time at 6:30 on Monday. It was a win win.

But she did complain that it was getting dark too early on our bike ride home from day care on Monday.

Two and a half weeks ago, before the snow, I was able to finish work at 4:30, get to the trail head by 6, and finish a quick ride before the sun set at 7:30. I wouldn't have been able to do that with the sun setting an hour earlier.

For me it's complicated by the fact I have projects in Saskatchewan and Yukon, so the Daylight vs. Standard Time distinction actually is important. It's not enough to just say "Mountain Time" to people in Whitehorse: they're on "Mountain Time" all year. I had a conference call with people in Whitehorse just yesterday, and I had to remind the person organizing it last week that Alberta would be rolling back to MST on Sunday anyway, so they didn't have to distinguish MST vs. MDT when picking a time for the call.

You wouldn't be doing that now, regardless of the time change.

Fair point. Saskatchewan and Yukon folks require a little extra care, especially in March and November.

I'm quite thankful for modern calendars and scheduling tools because, even though I have a general appreciation of time zones, it helps keep everyone aligned.

I was mostly referring to the individuals that want to go on standard time year round. They're weird.

I'm in the "keep the time change" camp. It's kind of the best of both worlds. A 8am-5pm (approximately) winter sun window coupled with long spring, summer and fall evenings. Sign me up.
