Gotta give him at least two full seasons in charge, then we will start to know.

Right now he is still swimming in BT feces.

Barring it being discovered the Conroy turned down a deal of Kadri for McDavid, there is nothing to blame him for yet. The team was a giant mess the day Gaudreau and Tkachuk left and the writing was on the wall at that point. Treliving took a massive swing for a homerun that most people liked at the time, but in the end it was a game-losing out. So it doesn't matter if it's Conroy, Yzerman, or any other GM calling the shots. As long as Murray Edwards consistently hires yes-men and Mr. Bean refuses to use the R word, this is how it's going to be. FWIW I think Conroy is as much a yes man as there is in the league, but he's been waiting for this job for years now so he's not going to turn it down because the guy before him left a mess. You accept the job, sign the contract and deal with the ramifications when the time comes.

I would love nothing more than to see him succeed. But the mess he inherited is bordering on Sutter's mess when he was GM, except Conroy has way worse players and way worse contracts to deal with. This mess is actually probably worse.

Craig Conroy shouldn't have taken the job. He's a nice guy, has lots of money in the bank. Why risk it all by taking one of the worst jobs going in the entire league? He came in with no cap room, almost no moveable assets, and a bunch of terrible long-term contracts that will be on the books for much longer than most GMs last on the job.

The NHL needs to follow the NFL and NBA model of limiting contract lengths to way less than eight years. The max deal should be four years, maybe five if the player has won a Hart, Vezina, or Conn Smythe trophy. We're going to struggle to complete with the contracts we have on the books for the next 7-8 years.

You have to give the guy some time to try and put his stamp on the team. It's not like there have been a plethora of trades made that Conroy could have jumped in on. Give him a chance to make something happen. Having said that, I'm not enamored with the coach hire, so that makes me nervous. Will judge him on how he approaches his first in season trade and moves with the minors.

If this season continues the way it’s going, let’s revisit this when Lindholm and Hanifin have returned 6 valuable pieces at the deadline because they’ll essentially be on ELCs for whoever gets them.

Conroy not signing any UFA’s, leaving positions on the roster for youth, and a draft of big bodies is such a departure from typical Flames management that I want to see the fruits of his strategy. Give him a few years of leash.

For any new GM, have to give them years, not days.

Especially with the lack of cap space for most teams.

I would think, he would like to make moves....

Conroy needs to approach his mandate as a 3-5 year project to transform the team into a contender. He needs to look at all aspects of hockey operations including drafting, developing, scouting, coaching, and the on-ice results and outcomes. He can’t and shouldn’t be too absorbed in small sample size regular season performance.

Hopefully he has the support from above to take this approach, and the team around him to help him to make the right decisions.

Weird take.

These guys are COMPETITIVE. That's why they played pro hockey at the highest level. He still wants to win...and obviously thinks that, despite the limitations of ownership, roster, cap etc that he can build a team that can do exactly that.

That's why he took the job.

I feel bad for Conroy as he is coming in at probably the worst scenario with the cap being flat the last few years. This year the market has been as bad as it will ever be. So I don't envy him being in a position where if he wants to make a trade that he has to do it in this environment. To be honest I think that he has learned from that from the Toffoli trade. No one is going out of their way to help you so if you can sign a Hanifin, then do it do. Doesn't mean you can't trade him later without being held to a deadline. It also may make a team step up and put a real offer in if they like Hanifin. Bottom line, I think Conroy holding the line on some of these players is a sign he knows what he is doing. Worst case is taking a trade for the sake of making a trade.

In regards to Toffoli, that was a trade that needed to be done. One to open up a spot for the kids, and second it wasn't a player that you wanted to commit to long term. It is no surprises that Toffoli is out producing Sharangovich, that is to be expected from a vet compared to a player going into his second contract. From an asset management perspective it is what happens the following year. Flames were hoping they could get a player that was on the verge of popping and that mid 3rd pick in a good draft. I think it is still too early to call that one. That is essentially what a futures trade is.

If Conroy could make 8 years of time go back without anyone noticing that might appease a few of the wolves.

In today's league with a tight cap and so many players on long term contracts, it's harder than ever to change up a team. Conroy has a very tough job given what he inherited.

Do you think his personality, and/or his current assets are at risk with this job? Are the fan-police going to enter his home, seize his assets, take his family away, and give him a terrible haircut?
