Not a fan of either hire but it's a little early to bring out the pitchforks. That said the organization is exactly the same as it was last year outside of two people out (Treliving, Sutter) and one (Savard) in so I wouldn't expect a huge shift in how the team operates and how they evaluate amateur and pro talent. It's likely the next GM probably walks into a better situation than Conroy inherited as he's kind of stuck with a losing hand.

Nonsense. The summer market was soft. The trade deadline will afford the best returns these players are going to see.

Literally impossible to make any judgement on a GM until he has at least 3 years of sampling.

I didnt like the hire from the get go, only because I think the organization needed a reset from top to bottom if they truly believed that Sutter alone was the biggest issue and not the players themselves (for a plethora of reasons).

However, once they decided to stay the course with Conroy and Huska, then they need time to show what, if anything, they have to make things better. An 8 game sample is literally nothing right now.

2 or 3 years minimum for Conny..... this season, as well as next for Huska. Again, minimum.

I didn't love the return for Toffoli but since Conroy becoming GM:

more draft picks coming in than going out
team got younger
team got worse
no long term contracts have been signed
an inexpensive (placeholder?) coach was hired

If the team was rebuilding, that is roughly what it would look like. Now in truth, not much of anything has really happened so we will see what the future holds.

Lets be honest, Edwards is going to want to save money on management/coaching while they pay down Sutter.

Remember Edwards wanted to hire Maloney for the job without even conducting a process of interviewing candidates. The biggest issue with this organization is one that unfortunately isn't going anywhere until ownership changes hands.

The trade market in the offseason was terrible though.

Well, if the only alternative in this Murray Edwards waking nightmare is Don Maloney, sure.

Relative to his contemporaries, absolutely not. But that was never an option.

Well if we know anything about people, they can be relied upon to exercise patience and definitely will wait at least that long to cast any judgments on either of these two gentlemen.

Too early to tell about Conroy. I don't think there is much he could do with the mess that Treliving left him. I think he deserves at least a solid 3 years to work this out.

This for me. Sure the team looks bad, but what has Conroy done to commit to this team long term? So far he hasn't done anything.

Younger, add picks, already recalled Soloyov. Wolf will be soon IMO, but Flames have a light schedule until Nov 10/11 so Markstrom likley starts every game until then anyways.

Depth of this team has been great too.

Problem is when you get nothing from your top 2 lines you will not win. He's stuck with Huberdeau and Kadri and he has not commited to Lindholm. I think he has done a great job and he's left the door open if we keep losing we may just be ripping this apart.

Too early to tell, but I think this was the absolute worst possible situation for him, and then team, to come into.

This needed a totally different approach and even though Conroy can say he did things differently he definitely had an impact in the team construction and selection of a lot of the players on this team.

I understand his wanting stay in Calgary and take the GM job and the team seeing that they had a good candidate in house they could go to but it probably should have been a clean break for both sides.

It’s like Top Five Records said it’s all ownership. Some of the dumb desperation moves towards the end of all the Flame’s GMs tenures you have to think they were given a mandate or unrealistic confines to work in. When you’re in a box it’s hard to come up with solutions.

I feel like Tre is probably the sacrificial lamb and that’s part of why he moved on. I highly doubt he’s the one that thought to lock these guys up before they ever played a game but maybe I’m giving him too much credit. Just seems like a pattern of behaviour no matter who is managing the team.

I like that there’s so many fellas on this board who were working the phones with NHL GMs all summer to let us know that the trade market was terrible.

If the trades and buyouts in the offseason aren't enough proof for you than nothing will be.

I won't pass judgement, because I have no idea if they shopped those guys aggressively and saw no return.

I am skeptical though, given all the rumours of re-signing them. Going into the summer I was actually hopping we'd extend Hannifin and get rid of the rest. I like Backlund being signed because I like the human, but that changes things a bit and now maybe I'm more open to all of the rest of them going.

Right? The expectations are way out of whack. No one could fix this in one off season, especially one where the cap didn't rise.
