Edmontonians are fatter and die younger
Edmonton Journal
City of Fatties
Fifty percent obesity? Maybe they should look at bigger (thus fewer) seats for their next arena. Good news is they'll have shorter waiting lists.
Do they have Mr. Big and Tall Stores at WEM?

We're healthier than sickly Edmontonians
I know these articles really go nowhere, but it was amusing to see the Medical Officer for Capital Health "weigh" in on the subject....
No matter which way you slice it, Calgarians are healthier than residents of the Edmonton region, according to Capital Health.
Edmontonians are more likely to smoke, be overweight, eat fewer vegetables, be physically inactive and suffer from ailments such as diabetes and consider their mental health to be less than good, says How Healthy Are We 2006, the annual report of medical officer of health Dr. Gerry Predy.
And the life expectancy of an Edmonton male is nearly two years less than a Calgarian, says the report, which cites 2005 statistics from a number of sources including Statistics Canada and Alberta Health. The difference is very much a matter of money and demographics, Predy said Thursday.
"We have an older population, poorer and more aboriginals," he said. "A lot of it is related to income. We compare ourselves to Calgary all the time. Because of these factors, they certainly are healthier than we are overall."

That last paragraph just might make Sundeep cry..... I wonder, was he using the Edm vs Calgary angle to spur people on to improve and "beat" Calgary?

Wouldn't the people who need them go to SEC instead so that they can drive to each store rather then actually, gasp, walk?

Man, if this was written in USAToday or something, rather than the Edmonton Journal, there would be a riot up north.
Hell of an article though. Outright states that Edmontonians are fatter and poorer than Calgarians. It implies they are less educated (thus poorer), and attempts to stack blame on aboriginals and the elderly for the difference.

Isn't blaming their poor health compared to Calgary on aboriginals kind of racist?

LOL...oh Edmonton, the lazy, fat, poor cousin.
Oh another note, I would say Vancouver has the most healthy individuals. The lifestyle there just seems that way.

Unless Natives have been shown to have worse health than the rest of the population. I don't really know much about this, just playing devils advocate here, but Natives had a very particular diet for several hundreds of years. Drastically changing their diet (the one the body has been accustomed to eating) to something that is relatively unhealthy to their past diet, would have sever effects on ones health.

Sounds a lot like Lethbridge. By these standards Lethbridgians would probably die 4 years earlier. I'd like to see that comparison now. If that's not true, then this entire article is bunk.

certainly Capital Health should be able to spin this to garner even more per capita health funding, which they already receive, than the Calgary Health Region
and then every time an adverse event happens in the Calgary Health Region, opposition parties will use the event again for political gain and further evidence that Calgary is evil

Calgary as a whole might be "less fat" than Edmonton but I can assure you Calgarians are far from healthy compared to the rural areas of the province.
Haha but it don't really matter as you beat Edmonton at unfattness.

Quite obviously, it's because we Calgarians spend our days golfing and lollygagging at the local country club, sampling fine wines and eating grilled veggies on our $3000 BBQ's.
Whilst our portly neighbours to the North sweat it out at the local construction site, downing buckets of fried chicken chased with a garbage can filled with coca cola throughout the day.

I think you drastically over-estimate my daily lollygagging content.

In a stunning example of food related genocide, Captain Crunch sends 5 million boxes of his delicious breakfeast name sake. 10 million bottles of jolt cola, and all the boxes of icing suger that they can digest killing the entire population of the city in one cataclysmic left arm clutching orgy of heart attacks.
Edmonton stops existing.

I wonder how true that really is? for example looking at the Alberta Health website, one document I found quickly suggested that Calgary Health Region and Capital health actually had the lowest obesity rates of any health region in the province?
