Quebec's Provincial Debt Soars to $122.4 Billion
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servl.../National/home
I'd like to make note that this figure doesn't include any federal debt incurred on money spent in Quebec or any municipal debt incurred by any cities in Quebec either.

Guess it's easy to go into debit when you know you can just ask for more money and con the government into getting it every time.

Well if there are 7.5 Million people in Quebec (I had NO idea it was that populous) that works out to $16,320 per person...be sure to put THAT as an asterisk on your next sovereignty ballot

Finance Minister Monique-Jérôme Forget
Okay whats up with this, a hyphenated first name and one name is masculine and the other is feminine. Is their finance minister a transvestite? 122+ billion in debt, thats astounding, I didn't think the Feds had a debt that bad, let alone one province.

Begs a couple questions...
How's that provincially subsidized daycare working out for ya?
How's that provincially delivered pension fund working out for ya?
Ridiculous. This just makes me hate Quebec even more.

I was waiting for that.
And just when they were getting that 1970 World Fair almost paid for.
I read the article, they just threw an enormous sum out there and dont seem particularly concerned about it. Just a 'Yup, we're in debt.'

I think the referendum question should read.
If after a vote of more then 51% acceptance, and with the knowledge that you will no longer be allowed to use Canadian Currency, work for the Canadian Government, have to return disputed land to the natives after a vote, and cut a cheque for over $16,000 dollars, are you still stupid enough to throw away you cushy agreement in confederation and form your own country after the Canadian government seizes any federal properties or assets including seaways?

More accurately, it's mostly the fault of public-service unions in Quebec and past provincial governments which have refused to play hardball with them. To his credit, Jean Charest has tried to fight the unions and do more to get spending in order, but there's only so much he can do with such large sections of the population siding with the unions.

The feds are running up in the $500-550 Billion range for debt. The Conservatives have reduced it by close to $25 billion in the past two fiscal years so it's declineing. The Libs were paying it down too but at a slower rate. Keep in mind that if Quebec were to leave Canada, the feds would saddle them with their 'share' of this national debt as well seeing as though a large percentage of it was incurred for Quebec's benefit. So to build on the $16,000 per person figure quoted above, it should be doubled and put on the ballot next to the 'Oui' box.

There are three guys walking together, a Newfie, a Quebecer, and a Calgarian. They come across a lantern and a genie pops out.
The Genie says, "I will give you each one wish, that's three wishes."
So the Newfie says, "I am a fisherman, my dad's a fisherman, and his dad was a fisherman, and my son will be one too. I want all the oceans full of fish"
Like that, the oceans were full.
The Quebecer was amazed, he said, "I want a wall around Quebec, so no one will get in."
And like that, there was a wall around Quebec.
The Calgarian says, "Tell me more about this wall."
The Genie says, "Well its about 150 feet high, 50 feet thick and nothing can get in or out."
So the Calgarian says "Fill it up with water."
(I've seen this joke with Calgarian, Vancouver Guy, and Guy from Ontario)

Just to be fair- keep in mind that the national debt for Canada works out to $14,690 per person.
But it is interesting that as most provinces work on reducing their debts, Quebec's continues to grow.

What your leaving out then, is if Quebec seperates they would also be reponsible for a fairly sizable chunk of the National Debt as well.
Servicing Alberta, Sask, B.C., Ontario and the Maritimes, certainly didn't create the entire debt.
One of the conditions of seperation has to be the negotiation of a buy down on a percentage of the national debt.

I'd like to kick him out, but he keeps bringing these hot girls over.
But I swear to god, I don't think we're even speaking the same language here.

Actually, separatists have generally deluded themselves into thinking that if they split from Canada, their financial headaches will instantly disapear. These people have fooled themselves into thinking that they put more money into Canada than they get back.
That, and they think that if they do separate, they will not be taking on any of Canada's federal debt.

Wow.
