You know, I was thinking, I've move from job to job pretty regularly trying to find something that I think is cool and interesting. I was laid off from one job from lack of work.

I've never been fired once, makes me think I'm missing something from my professional development.

Well I'm off to take a pee in my boss' office.

Here's a question... my manager knows I'm actively searching for new work, but I currently work at home. Do I have to actually go in to work to hand in my notice, or can I just tell her that I've found a new job and am giving my two weeks via phone, as she's already aware it's coming? I know I'll have to go in for exit interviews at some point anyways. I'm trying to avoid going in as much as possible here.

Honestly unless its a long commute or inconvienient due to either circumstance or health issues, you should go in and do it in person.

There's also no reason why an exit interview can't be done over the phone.

While I generally agree with this comment there may be circumstances where it is too uncomfortable to go into the office. If you have a good relationship with the manager, which it sounds like, you could tell them on the phone and then mail or email the letter to her, if no one else reads her mail/email.

At a certain point you just have to do what is right for you.

Well, I managed to do it earlier today. I sat down with my manager, gave him the letter, and told him it was my intention to resign, with my last day being Wed May 16th. He read the letter, said "That's too bad", then thanked me for my work the past couple of years. I wasn't walked out (unfortunately). My co-workers don't know yet.

Thanks for all the advice...I re-read this thread before taking a deep breath and walking into my manager's office.

Interesting thread. I've got a question.
Recently a few of my co-workers gave notice to go work for the newly launched competitors. They gave two weeks notice, but the company made them leave on the spot. Are these people still entitled to their two weeks of pay?

In short, yes, I'm also assuming that they didn't have to sign a non-compete clause when they started with your company.

If they didn't then thats a bad hand slap for whoever does your HR work.

They are if they worked more than two years and less than four. If they worked more than 10 years the employer has to pay them 8 weeks.I think that's better than actually having to work.

It is fairly common for employers to ask you to leave immediately if you are going to a competitor.

Advice to all: Don't quit thru IM at 2am in the morning and follow it with "lol" thinking it will make it better.

And yes, that's exactly how my subordinate told me he is quitting a few weeks ago. Needless to say, I was not impressed.

95% of the time it is less than you build it up to be. Congrats on doing it right and good luck in your new job. I assume your co-workers will be streaming in over the next two weeks to see if the company has any other openings!

Just as a follow-up a week later:

For all you managers out there, when someone gives you two weeks' notice, it's best to get them to clean up whatever they can within a day and then walk them out of the office. Since it was announced I was leaving, I have been beset by co-workers who just want to biatch about this place. Just by chatting about my leaving, I feel like I'm rubbing their faces in it (although not my intention). So me still being here can't be good for morale.

As well, my caring about what goes on here has dropped dramatically. I'm certainly not as productive as I used to be. 80%+ of my thought process here is the vacation I'm taking the day after I leave here.

In summary, I'm completely slacking and I'm depressing the people who'll be left here. It seems like a no-brainer that once someone resigns, he/she should be walked out, no?

(However, I will not be doing the standard "leaving employee fills his pockets with office supplies" trick.)

I quit my job this afternoon. Months of seemingly incompetant management finally broke the camels back. I went in to see my manager and told him I didn't want to work there anymore and I was leaving and not comming back. He shook my hand and told me if I needed a reference he would give me one. So............ anybody looking to hire a customer service/sales guy?
