That Monahan trade has to be an all time worst trade. Just painful. Good riddance Bradly.

The Monahan trade and Kadri signing is a classic last ditch effort to go all in or risk being fired kind of a move by Tre.
But Emil Heineman was traded in the Toffoli deal.

Wasn't Heineman a part of the Toffoli trade?

The Kadri signing and Monny trade is hardly a last ditch effort for a GM who is trying to save his job, looks to be the opposite.
Don't think ownership is handing out the money they do last summer and allowing someone on the chopping block to do it. They also tried to sign him all season to a extension.

Heineman probably ends up with a decent career as a bottom-sixer, but he doesn't currently do anything that Deuhr doesn't do and the Flames got Deuhr for free. The Flames would be better with Heineman in the prospect pool, but he's not a blue-chip prospect that we should be lamenting.
And realistically, Kadri's 7x7 contract would have been given to Monahan if Monahan was capable of being healthy. It does suck that the Flames gave up a 1st and obtained an older player, but at the end of the day, Kadri is providing the same level of value on the ice that a healthier version of Monahan was providing.
Cheer up, guys. Lets save the negativity for the middle of the season when the Flames are actually disappointing us.

Totally explains why ownership wanted to keep him.

Does anyone really have high expectations for this season that would result in disappointment?
At this stage, I just hope they don't inflict any additional long-term damage. The only thing that would really disappoint me is trading away futures. Just don't do that.

the first in Toff trade was a throw away?
They were going for it and had the team to do so. It didn't work out.
Imagine the uproar at the 2022 trade deadline if the Flames did nothing to boost their first place team.
Not to mention Toffoli had a very strong year last year and netted the Flames a couple assets in a trade.
The first in the Toffoli trade was very far from a throw away.

I don't care at all about Emil Heinemen. Not a difference maker. But trading a 1st to get out of 1 year of Monahan and then anchoring the salary to Kadri was a stupid move when it was made, and has only looked worse since. Just terrible decision making.

True, but a late 1st is typically the going rate for a 1 year cap hit of 6-7 mill.
It's more the decision itself than the trade.

There seems to be a few guys in town already, don't know about skating. Swedes are all still in Sweden, probably trickling in over the next week or so

Vladar's been in Calgary for a week now. I think Duehr has been here all month
From social media it looks like Markstrom is getting ready to go back

Not too worried. You will be able to grab a case of Heineman wherever you like to shop.

Going in line with our usual pattern of win division then miss playoffs... I expect us to win the division haha

1) The Flames lost two elite players last off-season. They got one back in the Tkachuk trade.
2) Ownership didn’t want the team to take a step back, so management’s mandate was to go out and get another high-end difference-maker.
3) Kadri was the best skater available on the UFA market last season. In order to fit him into the cap, 6+ million had to be moved out. The cost of moving out that size of contract was a mid-to-late-round 1st.
So given 1 and 2, what do you think Treliving should have done differently at step 3? Who should he have added to the team, and how should he have acquired him?

Seemed like more than 50% of the board smelled Kadri to the flames a mile away and the vast majority were ripping their hair out hoping it wouldnt happen. I was one of them. A career 60 point player with troubling club/fan history and a single career best year playing 2nd fiddle to one of the best lines of the last 15 years, needing one of the most expensive contracts in club history.
It was a poor decision. I know that ownership still wants to compete but we could have done better with the money elsewhere. OR we could have held monahan and sought a trade mid season/ later on that would have been much less costly.

Our situation now would feel much, much less hopeless if we didn't have all that Kadri salary on the books.
