Its one of the big things that I mentioned when COVID started and they really only barely touched on it near the end, but Commercial Real Estate needed to be prepared to take some of COVID in the teeth.
Because otherwise you just bury small businesses and even giant businesses! And you can bitch and moan about getting your rent but they're not going to pay you and then you set yourself up for a gigantic down-swing cycle thats going to take years to recover from.
Especially in a place like San Francisco...the tech companies were amongst the first ones to realize "We dont have to be here anymore."
And when they're the ones paying the Lion's share of the rent? Except for 'The Company Formerly Known as Twitter' but my understanding is that he stayed and still doesnt pay his rent.

Not San Francisco, but this was in Emeryville which is next to Oakland. Apparently, there was also on shot fired from one of the teens. Luckily, there were no casualties. Apparently, people were rallied on social media to show up at the mall.

I stayed in Emeryville once, near a nice outdoor mall (I think the same mall this took place) w/ Apple Store and the works.. typical upscale shopping and restaraunts
I was walking with my pops after dinner and there are cops literally running after 2 dudes, car windows broken EVERYWHERE.. just absolute chaos.
My wife is from Stockton CA, I spend a lot of time in NorCal and it is absolutely a mess almost everywhere you go. Especially worse in the last 5 years or so.
The Bay Area was one of my favorite places to visit going back to being a teenager and now I have no interest in the place. SF is a cluster**** these days

Weren’t you the guy talking about cleaning his pistol in preparation because there was a peaceful protest near his gated community?
Look...I actually like a little 'grit' to my urban landscape...but there are limits.
Especially when I'm spending my money.
I dunno. I think people suffer from target fixation sometimes. When I go to SF or Seattle or Vancouver, I can’t help but enjoy myself and see the cool things. To other people, they can’t get the one weird thing they saw out of their mind and keep looking for more instances of it. I don’t walk around wringing my hands and making a constipated face because things don’t look like they did in the 1950s. I understand things are grittier. If people can’t let go of that, they’ll never enjoy any place because these things exist everywhere. Maybe join the Metaverse.
People’s anecdotes are like reading the complainiest Yelp reviews.
The Following 3 Users Say Thank You to Wormius For This Useful Post:
63 per cent disapprove of the job the the San Francisco Board of Supervisors is doing
65 per cent disapprove of the job the mayor is doing
Respondents who agree the following are extremely serious or very serious problems the city faces:
Homelessness: 94 per cent
Open air drug use: 84 per cent
Fentanyl dealing: 81 per cent
Crime and lack of safety: 79 per cent
Cost of housing: 79 per cent
Respondents who support arresting and prosecuting people who are using fentanyl, meth, or heroin in public: 69 per cent
If anything, it looks like people who live in San Francisco are even less happy with the state of the city than tourists are.

You realize that there isn’t a city on the planet where most people share your outlook about homelessness and public drug use, right? It’s a view held by only a fraction of residents in San Francisco, London, Lisbon, Paris, Vienna, etc.
People in even in the most sophisticated urban communities do not want to live and work and spend their leisure time around drug-addled zombies, aggressive beggars, and unconscious addicts. They don’t want to step over feces and needles on their way out to eat. They don’t want their cars broken into and their packages routinely stolen. They don’t like public disorder and lawlessness. And they expect the people they elect to government to address those problems and not shrug them off as an inevitable aspect of living in the big city. Politicians who don’t understand this are getting turfed out of office all over North American and Europe.
If those things don’t bother you, give yourself a pat on the back - you’re an extraordinarily tolerant and fearless person. But your expectations of everybody else are unrealistic.

I read an article in the WSJ a few weeks back about how Oregonians are largely regretting the legalization of all drugs. It's just become too difficult to manage and people are having extreme issues in running their businesses. While Wormius seems fine with people smoking crack on C-Trains (we've been through this in the other thread) or basically just doing anything they please, the vast majority are not cool with it.
What is the drug they are doing where they bend over at the waist with their pants around the ankles and sort of pass out? Was talking about it last night and no one could name it.
In 2020, Oregon became the first state in the nation to decriminalize the possession of small amounts of illicit drugs with the passage of Measure 110 by voters. The measure also allocates funds from a tax on cannabis to expand access to drug treatment and recovery services.
A new study from Portland State University finds that law enforcement officers across Oregon seem frustrated with Measure 110 and confused about the role they are now expected to play in the interdiction of drugs.
A new study from Portland State University finds that law enforcement officers across Oregon seem frustrated with Measure 110 and confused about the role they are now expected to play in the interdiction of drugs. Christopher Campbell, associate professor of criminology and criminal justice at PSU and the co-author of the study which was published last month, interviewed 23 police officers and sheriff’s deputies in three urban and three rural counties in Oregon along with his team.
“Officers are largely skeptical about Measure 110′s ability to motivate people to actually voluntarily seek treatment. So, as a result, they’re hesitant to actually provide the citations that Measure 110 requires them to do,” Campbell said.
The citations carry a $100 fine and include a phone number to call for drug treatment assessment. Campbell added that despite the frustration they felt, the officers believed that many of the people they cited actually wanted to enter into treatment programs.
Possession of illicit substances like meth or fentanyl can still result in misdemeanor or felony charges, depending on the amount. Campbell said that the average number of drug possession arrests and citations currently being made are roughly 70% lower than the average monthly possession arrests prior to pandemic.
An even more recent poll in Oregon found that 64% of voters want to repeal portions of the measure, including possibly bringing back criminal penalties for possession, and 56% support repealing it entirely. The poll, conducted by Emerson College Polling, was commissioned by the Foundation for Drug Policy Solutions, an Alexandria, Virginia-based organization that opposes decriminalization nationally.

I believe that is Tranq?

Couldnt tell you, but that stuff is supposedly a nightmare. It apparently causes your skin to fall off and causes open sores and wounds that get infected...not pretty.
