Seconded. It's a negotiation so negotiate it down to 4 years or walk away. How can any non-franchise player demand such a term at that age, and expect it? Silly organizations never learn.

If the maximum the Flames will go is 4 years, they may as well pack up and go home.

It is pretty rare these days for the old guys to get max term on their contracts. The older guys like O’Reilly and others usually get less than max term. That being said, the Flames are an organization that likes giving out max term so you are probably correct.

Lindholm is 4 years younger than O’Reilly. O’Reilly just signed a 4 year contract . Lindholm signing an 8 year deal would make them the same age, at time of contracts are over .

Potentially as he's a pending UFA. But other than pending UFA contracts they haven't hit 8 years once in my recollection.

Giordano's big deal was 6 years
Tkachuk's deal was 3
Monahan's big deal was 7
Lindholm's deal was 6

The only max term offers I can remember in recent years were to keep UFAs ... the one to Gaudreau and the two to the Florida players last year.

If Lindholm has another down year that is the only way I could see him settling for less than the 7 year max term if he went to free agency. He is the same age as Johnny was when he hit the market.

Lindholm should get max term most likely but I am curious how much actual interest there is out there for him. I think Johnny was caught off guard by the lack of offers. I also think this limits trade partners because anyone trading for him as a rental likely doesn't want to give up a big package. Anyone who has interest long term might think it's better to wait until free agency.

I know a lot of GMs lack self control, but still. Like others have said, usually it's only the superstars who get max term at this age.

Yes he would get 7 years on open market. He’s a top line centre that plays a 200’ game.

And I'd say every NHL GM knows this is exactly the type of player you add to a team ready to win to put you over the top.

He'll go for value if they don't sign him.

But they may need to wait for cap space to be generated through the season with how tight the market is.

If he wasn’t open to staying I think he would have been like Hanifin and stated he wasn’t going to sign but will show up to camp etc. I think he is open to it but no discounts this time and will want to maximize his AAV

Yeah I think he was genuine in saying he's on the fence with the fence being what happens to the other UFAs.

With only Toffoli moved I think he's still stuck on that fence; not enough decisions made to form his own.

If he doesn't want to be here, why not just say it? Doesn't seem like the type to hide what he's feeling.

It seems way more likely at this point that he wants to be here with conditions. Money, winning, culture... Who knows.

I do know that overpaying him is going to feel like a huge blow. Anything over 8.5 will further cement Calgary as a player's doormat.

He is absolutely the type to hide what he's feeling. Certainly from the public and the media. He's one of the quietest most private players on the team. One of the reasons few people see him as Captain material. Doesn't like talking to the media.

He doesn't have to say a word to the media. By all accounts he's been pretty vocal to the team management about direction. That has nothing to do with his public persona.
