The Pens did well here. Still don’t think they’re good enough to contend, but they’ve definitely became a more entertaining team with this trade

Looking at the east I bet its the more normal 96-100 to qualify this season

GL
Haha, Flames missed the playoffs by 2 points with 93 points, Pens missed the playoffs by 1 point with 91 points.

Yet you go physco on anyone that suggests the Flames are a mediocre team that isn't worth adding to as they aren't close to contending, while out the other side of your mouth the Pens in largely the same position are a bubble team that isn't going to be good enough by adding a 100 point D-man, so they shouldn't have done it, lol.

And the Panthers are basically the Flames that got lucky because they were close to missing the playoffs. I enjoy hearing all your opinions twist and turn to fit the narrative that everyone sucks and the Flames rule.

They haven't been good enough to contend in years, this is just to make Sid and Geno happy. Sid is a shadow of himself and Geno can't stay healthy. But, it's an interesting mix for sure.

Anyone thinking the Panthers are the Flames is off their rocker, all their guys are in their prime and just had the (brutal) experience of going to the finals. These guys are going to run it back imo or at least be very competitive. They are still missing a piece on D (Hanifin) and maybe some punch but they look very close.

Going backwards:

Missed playoffs

Lost to Rangers in 7 with a spicy pork thing in net

Lost to NYI in 6, including 2 OT losses. NYI was the only team to really challenge Tampa that year (losing 1-0 in G7)

Lost in quali round to Canadiens despite being the best team forced into the quali round. #### happens.

Swept by NYI

Lost to eventual cup winners WAS in 6

Cup

Cup

2 of the last 3 years were plenty competitive.

Wrong on two counts, especially about Sid.

NHL.com just released a ranking of centers. They have Crosby at #5. Guy had 93 pts last season and is still the best grinder in the league.

He got 100 points because his team played river hockey and would rather lose than win

The plus minus stat is so useless. This paints a better picture:

All Situations
SJ with Karlsson: +11
SJ w/o Karlsson: -93

True 5v5
SJ with Karlsson: Even
SJ w/o Karlsson: -52

He kept that team afloat. They are going to be AWFUL next year.

The last Flames center to have 93 points or more was Robert Reichel. Somehow I think the Pens are fine to at least make the playoffs next year.

Crosby is still scoring comfortably over a point per game, Malkin had the best season he's had in years last season, outside of the whole stroke thing and a broken foot, Letang still had a very strong year (his defense was more suspect than usual, but that wasn't helped by the fact that Dumoulin's skill set fell off a cliff in the last 2 years and previously he was the anchor that allowed Letang to do his thing).

Those three were not even close to the Penguins' problem last year. They (along with an extremely strong year from Jason Zucker) were the only reason we didn't miss the playoffs by 15-20 points. I don't know if people outside of Pittsburgh realize just how badly Hextall wrecked this team, it was ugly.

Over paid Karlsson + 3 mil cap = 1st, 2nd

That's what this boils down to and that's pretty damn good for the Pens. I like it.

I don't like the fit, but I do want to see Crosby and Co. make one last dance. Keep adding Pitts, maybe you could use a "leagues best 3rd line center" in Backlund.

Didn’t a good portion of their roster require surgery after the playoffs or am I misremembering? If that’s the case then they may not make the playoffs to run it back.

Yeah I'm totally advocating for the Flames to trade a first for a 30+ year old dman

100 point dman again lol

He has been over 82 points ONE time in his career

The Penguins are not a good team...I see a lot of back patting here as usual.

Come at me, Pens will have fewer than 95 points

$100 bet smart guy

Some posters think every team in the east is going to be good

Panthers and Pens co-champs lol

Who in the east is out of the playoffs if the Pens are in? What about teams like Buffalo? Pens will be in tough. Can't wait to bump this.

Highly unlikely... Cinderella teams almost never get back to the ball

Decent deal for the Pens. I still don’t see them as a real contender, but they were already committed to that roster so might as well go for for it. And in 2-3 years they’ll be tanking hard which is frankly what the Flames should have been doing.

Not gonna happen with Carter there as 3C.

If they like Backlund so much they’ll wait a year.

Is it really controversial to say he is a shadow of his former self? Prime Crosby vs. now? Still a very good player obviously because he is generational but he isn't dominating like before. The miles are starting to show, same with Malkin. And I'm talking especially about playoffs here.

This is the issue for the Pens with me. Their core guys are all 33+ now. The odds of them all being healthy, energetic and ready to go on a long playoff run aren't high. But again they are committed to trying so this move makes sense.

In the long run, giving up futures doesn't matter to them because they're going to be in a serious rebuild for a while either way.
