Can't brush #### like that under the rug. It's time to snuff out the repulsive side of junior hockey culture and make an example of it for future generations to consider before they fall down a similar path.

I can't believe it was so accepted as a society. Like if you came across any junior hockey player in Canada 15+ years ago you almost just rolled your eyes at how disgusting and perverted you knew they were. We should have been calling it out, we knew it was wrong even back then.

Is this true for most people?
I don't think it was widely accepted or that I ever assumed any junior hockey player was disgusting and perverted at all.

Nope, only hockey players are disgusting and perveted, nobody else. It's definitely not 16-20 year olds in general.
Sarcasm aside the difference was in the culture of Hockey and high level minor and junior hockey. But that culture is finally changing.

Anyone with like a passing knowledge, probably. 18 years ago was when Aliu's hazing stuff came out. He refused to strip naked and get into a team-bus's washroom with the rest of the rookies so his teammate Downie fought him.
https://www.espn.co.uk/nhl/news/story?id=2196528
And pretty much everyone involved in hockey (that I knew) was just like "yeah, pretty much normal #### we do."
Also it's pretty insane there was no charges since the rookies are underage...
EDIT: Sorry, I misread what thread I was in and thought it was about hazing stuff, not sexual assault stuff, but even then the hazing was sexual assault.

But I mean, if you're going to sexually assault your own teammate for pretty much only pure humiliation and power dynamics, you're also going to be going around sexually assaulting young women for sexual gratification on top of that.

You think guys on the soccer team, chess club, or debate team were doing the same depraved sexual behaviors that junior hockey players were?
I can assure you that hockey players are/were the worst, and it was common knowledge 15+ years ago. And everyone just kinda shrugged their shoulders saying well, that's just hockey players for ya.
See the Aliu story above.

I think there is plenty of evidence from all sorts of teams/groups of (mainly) men aged 16-21 doing awful things.
There is zero reason to think that junior hockey players are in some special terrible group alone. It seems to be a weird Canadian thing to try and make it out that hockey is so awful when there are plenty of examples in other similar groups as well.

I don't know, I was in a few team sports in high school and while there was some very minor hazing I never saw anything close to what I've heard of from friends who played Jr. The only thing I've seen that was a similar enviornment the garbage that went on in the PPCLI.

Major-junior hockey players sodomized with hockey sticks covered in “liquid heat.” A group of teenaged rookies forced to masturbate and ejaculate on the same slice of bread, the last to do so forced to eat the bread. One player watched as rookies on his team were forced to have sex with prostitutes.
Players encouraged to fight teammates in practice. Players spat on, urinated on, defecated on. Rookie players forced to pick up the feces of older veteran players and throw it at other rookie players. Rookie players forced naked alongside a half dozen other naked teammates into a small washroom on the team bus, also known as the “sweat box.” Rookie players whipped with a belt by their teammates and coach.

To be honest, I think the Starcraft club at my school did all these as well.

The Fraternity stories we get almost every year blow these stories out of the water in terms of the deaths and wide spread rapes involved there. Football in the US has similar hazing stories come out all the time including a current hazing scandal at Northwestern which is a top 5 academic school in the US with a coach that is as respected as it gets.
There are stories that come out from other sports as well that aren't as big a focus for us that hockey is and stories I have heard from people in other sports, if we are using personal antecdotes as evidence, similar in nature.
This isn't to say there aren't awful things that happen at the junior hockey level or give them a pass, but there does seem to be a lot of people that think this is a junior hockey problem not a society overall problem, that hockey players are worse compared to other similar groups and in the comment that I responded to that anyone involved in junior hockey is also a horrible person.

In Canada?
No, the junior players are our versions of those guys. We idolize hockey players like they idolize football players.

If we have similar groups in Canada why wouldn't we think similar things go on?
The military in Canada certainly have had issues with sexual assaults during its time, those all can't be from former junior aged players.
The stories I heard from sport outside of Hockey all happened in Canada.
So yes it is a problem not only in junior hockey in Canada.

The difference between 16-20 junior hockey players and 16-20 non junior hockey player males in their treatment of girls is that girls want to be with the junior hockey players so they have way more opportunities to be terrible.

I've didn't actually witness this happen, but I've been within one degree of separation. My best friend's team did it.
Junior hockey players in this country are idolized, so they get away with anything.

You must live in a totally different world than I do, I can only talk about what it is like in Alberta and this is not the case.
Hard to imagine it is the case anywhere, but I guess maybe in some of those small towns it could be.

Privilege really.
First off, no one is saying picking up a stick and hitting a rubber disk is going to make you a rapist. This isn't about hockey the sport.
And God knows a lot of those Starcraft kids would have loved to even have touched a woman.
But what the CHL has done is cultivated the toxic mindset in these young impressionable boys that brought out the worst in many of them.
You tell young men they are God's gift to the world, that sexual assault is just totally normal behaviour, that women want to get drunk and #### them, so it becomes normalized.
And that's why you had the Nike executive telling the drunk woman to take care of the boys and watched her to make sure she would.
I don't think that happened at the Pizza Hut when my soccer team got bronze in intramurals.

CroFlames said that any junior hockey player 18 years ago you rolled your eyes at how disgusted and perverted they were. I guess not calling them all rapists but pretty strong condemnation based on them picking up a stick.

I think it rarely happened at the CHL/Hockey Canada level as well. It also likely happens many times outside of hockey when someone has the money/power to say those things to women.
