Why would he agree to remain with the wings for less money?
Presusbly he wanted a termination to play elsewhere.

I assume the buyout counted against the cap, which wouldn't be the case here?
https://flamesnation.ca/news/flames-...out-last-month
For the curious, Stone will get paid for his buyout in each of the next two seasons on the regular paydays and get paid this season on the regular paydays. His cap hit for 2019-20 will be $1.867 million and for 2020-21 will be $1.167 million. The CBA only forbids the signing of players bought out using compliance buyouts for one year. There is no restriction on re-signing players on ordinary course buyouts.

Michael Stone's time in Calgary is so wild. Had completely forgotten he was bought out then signed again

Interesting choice, must feel he will get more top 6 opportunities there, or just wants to play summer sunny

I think arguably amongst the thinnest forward groups in the league so makes sense.

I think the choice is kind of Bizarre. Yeah, thin up front so playing time likely, but who with? Eklund? Didn't seem super ready to me. Maybe Hertl and he have a friendship, but I don't see them gelling well as play styles.

One year, 1.1mill for the season, I doubt he had teams lining up to examine opportunities

Meh, if it was all about money he would just have sat around in Detroit and collected his $3.5 mil or whatever. There's got to be an in between he's after here, I just think if he was betting on himself he may have made the wrong choice.
Seems like a fellow with trouble ordering his priorities though. Perhaps the siren call of no cal was too much to resist.

Grier must be planning on flipping him at the trade deadline.

Their top two forwards are C so it's not really that surprising. For top 6 W mins he needs to compete with Eklund, Zetterlund, Barbanov, Duclair, Kunin, Lindblom and LeBanc.
The latter 4 are UFAs and may be flipped at the TDL.

Yeah it's a good opportunity for him to play where he's not under the microscope on a team with low expectations where he will get a lot of ice time and ability to pad his offensive stats in hopes of parlaying it into a multiyear contract. Also players like it there as it's a nice place to play and live.
