With the signings the Leafs made and their current cap situation, it definitely seems like they are done negotiating with Nylander and he is out of the picture there. I can't see the Flames being a possible trade partner because we would need to send a money back the other way. A three-way deal might work, but those are so rare and complicated, that they are rarely worth even discussing.

Does this work for Toronto/enough to get out from Brodie for this year and solve their cap problem (Assuming Murray is going on LTIR and they want to sign Samsonov and we can sign Lindholm)
Brodie 5m
Nylander 7m
For
Hanifin 5m
Vladar 2.2m
Now Flames are then in a world of cap hurt, and would have to trade Tanev or Big Z for picks/prospects. Probably move Backlund as well
Brodie comes off the book next season and cap goes up. Maybe you can move Kadri next offseason with 'only' 5 years remaining if required.

I probably agree however if we can get rid of Kadri I would think about it.

If they want to attach some picks and prospects I'd be ok to do it having to trade away Backlund and become cap compliant and probably not getting full value.

All this speculation is based on the hope that Huska will right the ship. Imagine trading your best prospect and locking in an aging core, only to miss the playoffs again next year. What do you do then?

Flames cap situation is identical to that of Toronto’s if we take on Nylander without sending money the other way. I’m not remotely interested in such a deal unless we have already secured a haul for one of our veterans. Treliving backed into a corner, I see no reason to help him. He has to deal someone so offer him pennies on the dollar.

"Rebuild" or "retool" aside, the Flames focus should be on sustainability.
Getting Nylander in exchange for prospects and a pick or two is the wrong move imo. Especially because I don't think this team is *substantially* more competitive with Nylander. There are a lot of holes being filled by rookies, and additionally tying your hands with top tier contracts for arguably less-than-top tier players is a good way to crash and burn.
I think Craig has done fine so far, and I hope he continues to show patience.

Unless you’re trading Wolf for a young franchise C, you don’t trade Wolf.

It wouldn't be a good look. The Leafs might be playing Wolf while we miss the playoffs; And even if we made them and didn't go far we would still be upset that our young prospect was playing elsewhere. There is no return if you make that trade without valuing that young potential asset.
Nylander would be a great add if this was a younger core with elite pieces, but to bank on this core when our two top guys haven't shown us any heart or commitment in their first season is chasing a poor model.
I would sit back and see if Huberdeau and Kadri are serious this season because if either one struggles, or doesn't show up at least you know what you need to do both in terms of personal and long term goals.
Nylander is a shiny new potential toy in front of us so we get a little blinded and If we wait, better opportunities will likely open up.
Tree made this mess signing guys that stopped playing after they got paid, now he has learned something and signed 2 short term deals, he is hoping to give Conroy an anchor while he runs off with the goods.

I would think the opposite. Sometimes gms get enamored with their own players. You might be able to trade a guy that's not a fit for the new gms vision. Just remember to not be a nice guy.

One thing about the 2 guys Tree signed to short term deals it establishes the pecking order. The players then have to earn the right to stay and earn more and are not getting more leeway than the guys in the core. This was a problem with the Huberdeau and Kadri signings, suddenly they were getting paid more than guys who gave their hearts to the team night in and night out. Understandable if this caused friction between players. It would have been better if we had signed Huberdeau and Kadri to short term deals so that anything they got beyond that they would have to earn it and more importantly it respects the pecking order of the guys who were already in the system.

Honestly, trading with Toronto Nylander wouldn't even be my target. Taveres would be a good stopgap for calgary that would let Toronto out of cap hell. Give tre the cap savings in exchange for Backlund, but make him throw in topi neimela. Then trade lindholm with impunity for futures.
Unless taveres has taken a big step back that I don't know about.

I cannot believe people
a) don't want to sign Lindholm, because we shouldn't be signing more UFA-aged vets, but
b) want to trade assets for Nylander, for the privilege of having another $9M+ long term deal
Why on earth would we trade away assets for another winger? Signing Lindholm is a much better plan than trading for Nylander.
THe wonder-lust that some of you have for Nylander is absolutely baffling.
